Inspired by Learners recent post which has got me thinking of other uses for the handheld GPS so that I can play with it whilst not boating.

I am contemplating creating a waypoint at the spot where Skipper The Westie drops his business in the garden so that I can search and rescue them later.

Are there any other good uses for my presently under utilised Garmin?

Take your gps with you in a mates car and continuously tell them how inaccurate their speedo is. Then try to work out how accurate the gps speed is and whether it would be more or less accurate if SA was still enabled. . . . .

Then get some new mates.

I give mine to the kids, along with an OS map, then drop them in the middle of Dartmoor with the co-ordinates of the Rock Inn at Haytor (where I enjoy a long lunch while waiting for them to turn up).

Also useful for seeing how fast the kids can run round the garden at home, and checking how high above sea-level the garage roof is (or any other structure that can be accessed by climbing out of one's bedroom window).

No! this would only mean that at some stage you would be sharp enough to add a boating related reply which means Kim would have to put it back into it's proper place temporarily and wait for a NB reply so that he can change it backagain. Then he will be flooded with "Where's it gone" posts from Depsol. Yes/No I don't bloody know I wish woever the dipstick was who started this would own up so that we can swing from a yardarm and get on with a multitasking forum.

i cleverly lost the gps, and thus used it's loss plus £20 finders fee as motivation for the kids to unpack all the boxes in a house we have just moved to, and for checking every single cupboard/locker on the boat too. I finally found the thing at work.

over here they are having treasure hunts with them, giving waypoints that lead to the 'treasure', much like the sports car ralleys of old or 'poker runs' if you have a mapping gps you can use it to find yourself on the interstates, M9 etc.
