Hi Pete,

It's a long way to go just for the sake of it, especially if it's just for the weekend. You and the family will be bored $hitless.

2-3 hours of open water would do wonders for insomniacs. Much nicer to go where there is some scenery.

Re: Dearest Peter. Please empty your ****** PM box.

Funny you say that, I have just spoken to swmbo and she is NOT impressed with my plans, boring, boring, boring was her reply, an hour was boring last weekend going to Burnham, what the hell do raggies do for days on end?

We only have Saturday and Sunday, she doesn't want to waste all that time on a boat, leaving early was a plan to get over some of it. She is up for it but said that she would want a long weekend minimum, I'm being selfish as I need the experience and hours for my yachtmaster practical exam, perhaps I should think more about the family including a 4yr old who will be bored looking at sea, sea, sea /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Other option is to go on my own, but swmbo has been away working and wants a family weekend, so only other option would be a night crossing both ways so she doesn't know we are going, I must say that a night crossing both ways on my first ever crossing of the channel is a little worrying to put it mildly, I don't have radar and I would be navigating and helming on my own.

So what do I do, is a marriage worth it or should the ego of being a yachtmaster take over? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Re: Dearest Peter. Please empty your ****** PM box.

Save the channel crossing till the first week in August and come with us. We're leaving on the 29th July for about 10 days. And mini SWMBO gets a playmate. CI for a night or two then down to the north Brittany coast including St Malo for a few nights. Fantastic beaches there for the kids......

Re: Dearest Peter. Please empty your ****** PM box.

i understand kevb's point but by that ratioanle you would only ever go along the coast. And you can't pass YM without being out of sight of land. And it'll be fun visiting a brand new country.

Sepretly, I hear it is very good for people to be occasionally bored, especially kids. Life need not be one long calvacade of push-button instant-access fun, fun fun. And "being bored" is not transitive - if someone is bored then it is up to them to think or read or do *something* themselves to stop being bored. Kids often aren't very good at this.

Re: Dearest Peter. Please empty your ****** PM box.

What's the point in going if the majority aren't going to enjoy it? Especially just for the weekend. If going for a few days so gives time to have some 'fun' once there then ok but boring crossing followed by something to eat and bed (remember he has a 4 year old on board) then boring crossing back.
Nah, not worth it.

I think you need at least a full day without moving the boat to make that kind of journey worthwhile.

Re: Dearest Peter. Please empty your ****** PM box.

Two things Pete.

1. You need to get this adventure out of your system.
2. You have an ideal weather window.
3.

Three things Pete.

3. If you plan a long weekend, the chances are the weather will not play along.

4.

Okay, four things then.

4. Your SWMBO enjoyed helming back from Burnham so she will probably enjoy the trip abroad with its associated navigational challenges.

Finally - okay, so there are five points - finally, you will have the taste for using your boat to go to the Continent that does not rely on public transport.

Pete,

A bit of advice from experience....do not push it! If you do SWMBO will be turned off by the boat. Much betterto build up the miles when SWMBO is ready. There is no hurry or real time limit on you. Spend one weekend pootering around the Medway, the next exploring new shores. Also best to try the foreign isles in company first and you only have a 4 week wait!

If my boat was near you I would go over in convoy but it takes two days to get it down the Thames so needs better planning! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Cheers

Paul

Re: Dearest Peter. Please empty your ****** PM box.

I understand the out of site of land stuff, but family comes first especially when weekends are really sacred due to our hard weekday working schedules.

I will chat with swmbo tonight and see where we stand /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
