Osney Bridge headroom

Glad to say we made it quite comfortably this morning after removing the canopy and lowering the screens. Godstow was a bit more challenging but we got through OK. Soon after we encountered a lot of overgrown bushes and trees meaning the channel was quite narrow in places but it improved once we were through Kings Lock.

We haven't quite made it to Lechlade but we will be there mid morning tomorrow.
 
I bet your bits are frozen into little hard objects. It's too cold and I haven't quite acclimatised yet. I looked out today with a view to doing a little mowing and soon scuttled back into the warmth of my Den. I admire you brave souls who are still boating.
 
It's always great to have pointers to places to see and things to do.
I never knew about the church at Inglesham - it's an awkward place for me to turn...
Will make more effort if we go that way again.

Kelmscott Manor is (mebe) a place to visit if you like Arts and Crafts, the interior is a bit busy and some of the guides a bit gruff.

The Plough is well worth a visit with a large menu and good portions.

It's a shame (not) that the Upper- Upper Thames is only usable by vertically challenged boats!

Wife and I finally made it to Lechlade last week. Unfortunately, left boat in the marina at Shepperton and went by car. That will teach me to wimp out at Osney bridge in August! River looked great and I am determined to give Osney another shot next year. I just need to put on a bit of weight!

In my opinion it's not Lechlade itself which is so great but the river to it, (and past it for little boats). It's quiet and winding and great for spotting wildlife. I suspect it's very different to lower parts of the 'upper Thames'. Get up there next year!

I have no argument for any of that. Ignore the end of navigation at Lechlade, that's where the fun starts :D

I've lost three Red Ensigns upstream of the 'end of the navigation' by snapping them off on overhanging willows. It was worth it though! Of course somebody with brains would have probably removed the flag after the first time and certainly after the second.

You don't need to convince me. I just need the b***s to squeeze 7ft 6ins airdraft under Osney. Or more ballast!
 
It's many, many years since I did the upper reaches above Osney, and SWMBO never has. I do have very fond memories though and keep promising to hire a boat so we can do that bit. I get the impression it probably hasn't changed a great deal.

The trees may not have been cut back since then.....

That's where I used to go, drop an anchor and read a book. Most of the time there was nobody else to be seen. Loved it.
 
We made it to Lechlade OK but there are some places which really need the trees and bushes cutting back a bit and quite a few fallen into the river - in some places we had no choice but to scrape through narrow gaps - that horrid noise of branches against canopy, not great. Some trees have been recently chopped back though so hopefully it's a work in progress. We didn't try going further than the footbridge just past Lechlade though that would have been a bit risky for us. I've managed to update a blog a bit as we've travelled so if you're interested please take a read.

Great blog steve, next time in Wallingford go to the delhi brasserie for a cracking indian meal.
 
For future reference Steve, you can shop for groceries in Eynsham.
It's not too bad a walk from the lock, or walk the wrong way about a hundred yards and there's a bus stop :)
