Hi. I’m buying a 2005 Merry fisher 805 and having had a good look over it as a mechanic and boat owner of 30 years, wasn’t going to get a full survey. A local marine services guy has told me they are really prone to osmosis? Anyone give an opinion? The boat is not that old and I’ve a feeling he may just want me to pull it out as “you might as well get it antifouled and polished now she’s our” will probably be mentioned.
thanks for any advice

Well, I googled at length and did not see an osmosis pattern amongst the finds. Probably you should get it tested however for water within the hull

Better to know now than later ( and pull it out then)
spend money now to save spending more much more later is my feeling on these things but, hey it’s all a gamble innit

Does osmosis cause water ingress into the bilges? That would need to be very bad. Using a test tool on the hull is the way the surveyors tend to go about it, but as far as I am aware there are a lot of false positives with this approach.

Tranona thinks osmosis is a thing of the past on modern yachts. I cannot speak about MF boats. You can have a read of our recent discussion here on page 5:

Which sailboat?

Might be better to ask on "Practical Boat Owner's Reader to Reader" or "Motor Boat Forum" rather than Liveaboard. I think you will find more Merry Fisher owners in that way. It would also be worth posting on the Jeanneau Owners forum where there's a "Motor Cruisers and Powerboats" forum (Dedicated area for Cap Camarat, Leader, Merry Fisher, NC, Voyage & early Prestige Yachts).

I had a bit of osmosis on my MF 805, but was only on the edges and the skates of the hull. Only involving the clay that Jeanneau used to fill the corners of the hull. Not involving the fiberglass. Easy fix. Now, after 20 years the boat is still perfect.
