Hello all,
I am interested in purchasing a yacht that has just undergone professional osmosis treatment below the water line. The hull comes with a 5 year guarentee against osmosis and looks really good.

So the question I'm asking myself are:
1. How reliable is osmosis treatment?
2. Does it effect the structural integrity of the hull?
3. Will I need to redo it in the future (if it is technically possible)?
4. Should I turn and walk away from the purchase

you thoughts much appreciated...

Welcome Zebulon.

To answer your points in turn I would have thought that.......
i) Very, if done well.
ii) No.
iii) Maybe, if you keep the boat long enough, but see answer i)
iv) Only if crap job.

I presume you will be having a survey, find out who did the repair and get your surveyor's opinion on the workmanship.

Steve.

Make sure you see the guarantee before you make your decision. It should like an insurance policy from an independant company (costing the original owner approx 10% of the cost of the osmosis treatment).A simple guarantee from the repairer will not necessarily be transferrable to a new owner, and will be useless if that company subsequently goes bust.Otherwise I would go for it.

On many older GRP boats, the onset of osmosis is a virtual certainty as the gelcoat of those days did not have the same resistance to water permeability as today's gelcoats do. If the type of boat you are wanting is one of these oldies, It might be an idea to only look for a boat that has already been treated, unless the fact that it has not is reflected in the purchase price.
Good luck
