Osborne Bay - Permanent Buoys

As Searush mentioned, telephoto lenses have a 'compression effect' where things in the background look much closer than in reality.

Anyway nothing wrong with that shack a bazooka couldn't fix, with any luck it might take in the bloke forlorlnly polishing his now unused megaphone with one round :)

Here's a photo I have from 2005 no sign of a fence then.Maybe the bungalow was just a bit further along?

Can wait until there is a meeting of conservationists in there?

The 'bungalow' is new ..... and, yes, IMHO an abomination. Anyone know its function? .... I am guessing it's probably a 'tourist information point' also dispensing overpriced trinkets and refreshments?

There is no problem with anchoring in Osborne Bay, and it's optional to ones' conscience whether to go into the marked off 'swimmers area' where there's probably about as much chance of swimmers as my pulling Bo Derek.

We do however need to keep an eye on developments; the fuss on these forums when the 'Mr Megaphone' prat turned up helped a reaction already underway from the RYA legal dept, who seem usually very much on the ball unlike the PR lot !

Not been there but I think you will find its the Cafe. Described on the website as "the new stylish beach café. Converted from a pavilion built for convalescing officers in the 1940s" Whether or not it dispenses over priced trinkets I have no idea. I'd guess purchasing them , like the refreshments, is optional.
Near it is a refurbished bathing machine claimed to be the one QV would have used.

A liitle to the SE is The alcove " where Queen Victoria sat and enjoyed the views across the Solent"

Yes, the bathing machine used to be a little inland and reasonably protected from the worst weather. How much longer it will last in its new exposed position on the beach will be interesting. (that's assuming it IS the genuine one:) )

Whatever the pavilion was originally or is now, it is certainly an incongruous intrusion on what was (apart from the ugly warning notices) a near perfect -if off-limits- piece of coastline. Strange for an organisation titled ENGLISH HERITAGE.

Surely the wording "Private Beach" as shown on the buoy in the pic is not as required by the MMO Licence viz: "Under the conditions of the MMO Licence, the buoys will be fitted with "SWIM AREA" and "PRIVATE - NO LANDING" signs." and therefore the buoys are null & void.

I've been anchoring on & off in Osbourne Bay for over 40 years. The last time was about three years ago.
I now longer have any interest in sitting in a car park so just go there in the evenings & overnight sometimes when the masses have left......

They don't take the buoys in at tea time...and you'll be able to see them in the dark now too. If you find yourself sitting in the car park, you may want to check you GPS...;)

Would they mind much if I anchored off the beach and ran a stern line around the bathing hut just to be on the safe side ? :)

I think if you actually read the licence it doesn't specify anything written on the buoys, just their purpose.

Let us all know if you are planning to use QV's bathing machine.

We'll all come and push you into the water if you are. ;)

It's true the text doesn't exactly match but some of the bouys are marked swim area:

If the bouys don't require people to do anything then I suppose null and voiding them would change nothing.

VicS,

that's remarkably kind of you to offer keeping me a safe offing off the beach, but I can't let such generorisity go unpaid; when we do it I'll invite you all to a great barbecue - any ideas on a likely local source of firewood ?

Why do those buoys need lights on them are the National Trust going to extend opening hours to include overnight swimming parties? you would think that "Natural England" & English Heritage not to mention conservationists would object to them buggering up the environment.

Nicholas,

it's quite alright, it will not affect the environment if one has the correct hat, with illuminated letters and a flashing light on top.
