A mate of mine has just bought a 16' Orkney Strikeliner which he wants me to help him do up. One problem is the metal strip lining the keel. It looks as though this has partially come away in the past and the repairs have been bodged with a combination of mastic and non stainless screws which have rusted and caused corrosion in the strip around them.
My feeling is it would be best to remove the strip entirely and replace ,perhaps with some 5mm thick neoprene which can be glued/screwed onto the keel. The strip does however have contact with the rollers on the trailer and I am concerned the neoprene may not be up to it. Also I'm not sure how to get best access to the keel, is it possible to prop the boat on its side or should we just jack it up off the trailer and support it whilst working underneath??
Any thoughts much appreciated.

this is how it's done! Remove cabin if fitted, roll the boat over so it's keel up it's best done on grass or if inside on old carpet. Now drill off the old screw heads and remove the scrap keel band then remove thew screw remnants with pliers or mole grips clean up the keel with grit paper. Now fill all the holes with thickened epoxy allow to set overnight, clean again with grit paper the n wipe clean with acetone. Now take your newly purchased stainless keel band that has been pre drilled place it on the keel between the old now filled screw holes mark and drill three of the holes front middle back, remove keel band. Now apply Sika to the keel replace the band and fit your three stainless screws then drill and screw all your pre drilled holes with ablob of Sika in each hole DO NOT over torque the screws, wipe off the excess spike with aparraffin soaked rag and leave overnight.Next day roll over your strikeliner and go fishing!!!
