Origo - will it blow out

And don't expect any of the welds to last.

I've had both the 1500, and the 3000 for years, used everyday, and had not one problem.

Though, they were both gimballed, and I'm forward thinking enough to realise that if I've spilled meths outside the gauze, it needs wiping up or may cause the flame to spread. Perhaps I'm just fortunate :D

On that note, I'm just about to make a brew on it. ;)

Coffee white 1/2 sugar
btw i enjoyed your attempted circumnavigation videos are you going to carry on one day?

It was overfilling - away from the boat - that caused the problem, the meths will still slop out, despite the cans being filled with woolly stuff, if you overfill the cans. Stand on its side to drain excess. Slight spills evaporate pretty quickly.

Just ordered an Origo 1500.

Dylan Winter - viewing videos of your Origo tipped the scales to purchase here. Please send money. Or at least meths.

money in the post

not sure if I have entirely grasped the finacial model we have here

It seems that on this basis every time a sailor eats an egg banjo I appear to be responsible for the dry cleaning bill and I also have to pay them a royalty of some sort

the cash flow is going to be absolutely stunning

how to fill an Origo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R728pNOYbM0

I buy my meths on-line

it comes from Ayreshire

if you buy ten litres it is cheaper than driving into Aylesbury to pick it up

It is your fault D.W. because I may have resisted until pay day but for your shiny stove porn vids. Now it's on the credit card.

On a serious note I've read all the pros and cons and am using the Origo to replace a 'briefcase' gas cooker. The advice of the BSS people plus my early experience with Mamod engines convinces me meths is the way.

I find the 5 litre containers a bit awkward when full, so for convenience, and to minimise spills when filling underway, I decant my 5 litres of meths into a 2.5 litre bottle and about eight 500ml bottles. None of the bottles is more than about 2/3 full and are easily stowed in the galley.

The 500ml bottles are easier to control, less sloshing around, and it's simpler to estimate how much is going in the burner .. and it's easier to top up the small bottles from the 2.5 litre container.

good plan

gonna do that

I do find that filling at the beginning of a few days is great

but no point in filling on the last day - the meths just evaporates

I am sure you could put a bit of cling film over it.... but far better to do what you suggest and know how much fuel it is using

my way I do not really have a clue

We used a 3000 for 3 years on the old boat, without a problem. A small amount of water in the meths helps the smell a bit, or get some Alcohol Brulee from a French supermarket, which doesn't smell.

We brought some back this year for a friend. Cost about 1.8 euro for a litre as far as I can remember.

that is really cheap compared to the meths

and

I do add water

the container of meths had ten per cent water added by me

but even with the water it still smells stronger than the trangia

you get a better burn with the trangia - unless you use the blanking plate - in which as it is pretty much the same as the Origo

however, I doubt that I will ever go back to gas

Haven't you got the foam pads that go over the fuel container aperture when the stove is left unattended? Should have been supplied with it from new*

Open the lid, drop the pads over the burners, close the lid which then presses the pads down onto the burners. No (or at least minimal) evaporation even if it's left for weeks

Without them though a full container will become an empty container in less than a month!

* They are on the cheaper but otherwise identical Cookmate versions anyway. Maybe you don't get them with the Origo?

I didn't really get on with mine :o

Always had difficulty getting the canisters lit - had to lift the lid and light them directly - close lid then stick a match down the hole to re-light. The canister had to be quite full to light also which was a pain as the meths seemed to evaporate a lot despite the black pads or I just got through a near whole canister in about 15-20 mins. I think all this just must have been me not working it all properly

Trangia - brilliant :D especially with a gas canister connection :D

Gas on the new boat but have to check all the fittings -they don't look great :(

No picture -they have just "improved" Photobucket now i can't do anything on it!!

Origo must be female and hormonally challenging. Never know where you are with the bloody things.
Do not turn your back on them, fart out of turn or say a word out of place or they are off on one.
Never know what grade of fuel they want - always not the one you have just walked bloody miles in the pouring rain to get.

Second thing we took off the boat.

Removed an ancient heads and was do delighted that we decided we'd have a cup of tea to celebrate. Lit the 'Offfitgoes' and immediately understood all the black stains and marks in the area surrounding the 'galley'

The 'Offitgoes' came out very shortly after and was replaced with a £10 single cylinder camping gas stove. Saw valiant and faithful service for the next couple of years.
A standing instruction included filling the Thermos with boiling water before casting off. If the trip was expected to be long or arduous then it was a 2T trip - filled both Thermos flasks.

Do not dabble with the dark side!

beautiful bit of stove prose there

invective is spot on

however.... an origo is a mind set

it requires patience and a certain zen attitude from its keeper

find the way and you can live in harmony

come at it with the wrong attitude and you are bound to come unstuck

KTL will be holding a series of Origo seminars at Brough this winter

bring your own stove and meditation mat
