Origo - will it blow out

Mine has never blown out or produced fireballs, the welds haven't broken.

Not worth putting a pint of meths in. Just give it a splash.

What on earth is all that faffing with molegrips?

Stick one of these down the hole and give it a couple of clicks:

They are about 2 quid.

You can get them from Poundland complete with a bottle of gas for refilling.

100ml of meths should be plenty for a meal and few cuppas.

Decanting the 5L bottle into a few 500ml bottles is easier to manage, especially under way.

+1 Buy a 5 L can, but find some 500ml or 1L bottles to decant into. The standard fill is 1L, but lasts and lasts and lasts. I've used some of those 1 L bottles the Concentrated car windscreen wash comes in - seems to resist the meths OK, some plastic go soft!

Ah, but they're gas powered and that's a no-no on Dylan's latest vessel.

Don't forget that he's making a new film called "Back to the Past" starring Gaf Rigg, Al Cohol etc.

Expect to see clockwork, steam, horses, and eventually a conversion to Phoenecian galley before the year's out!

I wanted something that's safe to store the meths and to control the pouring of the meths so I don't splosh it everywhere when I go to light my Optimus. So I bought some of these (One for the meths, two for the paraffin - Yes they are labelled so I don't mix them up :):

I find these to be really safe for everyone to use as you control the flow by pressing the top of the lid down so the liquid pours out. Screw the lid down and no more liquid.

I also bought a large water bottle holder for a bike and screwed it onto the side of my cockpit locker so I also have a nice hand storage place for it now where it won't roll about or get lost in the depths of the locker.

You could just hold a few of them under the kettle....
I think these things are great, nothing worse on a boat than lots off grubby bits of used match on the cooker. I quite often pack one when I sail other people's boats.
Do the piezo lighters work with meths?

Two fires plus blowouts! And you still think this rubbish is better than bottled propane!!!

I've been using bottled gas in cars, caravans, tents, boats & at home for over 43 years without an incident, err other than a teenage daughter putting the gas on & failing to light it when we were ashore . But that's user error & once we vented the boat it was fine. On the other hand I can recall several "incidents" with primus parafin cookers & blowlamps despite only using them for a few years early on in my "career".

Dylan, you must be bonkers! I reckon you have tripled the risk of fire in your boat!

+1

I got one of these - self contained cannisters, no air lines, cheap, instant, no matches.. why mess about with liquid fuel??

I don't know if mine works from the flame or the piezo. I stick it right down the hole and give it a couple of clicks and it lights. Not sure if the lighter lights and lights the meths or if just the spark does it.

Well I'm still sticking with Origo, despite my experiences - it does seem an awful lot safer than pressurised gas to me. I want to replace my twin burner with no room for gimbals to a gimballed single.

However, the pan-holders both fell apart, the pan-holders' rail fell off at both ends, the gizmos that stop you opening it unless the control is at off both fell off (that's 6 separate welds / brazes) and one of the knobs has disintegrated (though this last was probably as a delayed result of fire number 2).

Tear inducing fumes were bad the first couple of times of usage, but not now, and I don't know why, though it may be brand of meths - we use Bird Brand now.

The long-nosed lighters are essential, IMHO, and offer the additional advantage of a wind-proof way of lighting a pipe.

You make it sound like they are surprisingly badly made!
and also "fire number 2"
And people think they are safer than gas!
im not so sure!

We find a good addition to the Origo is a pump pot to put any spare hot water into, especially if using kettle as a radiator to keep warm. Boil a full kettle on low heat then pour it into your pump pot for washing up or boiling up again later on.

Love these stoves, so simple and relatively safe compared to gas. Used the 2 burner one on my Jag 27 after taking gas off with an Omnia oven. Brilliant combination.
I like the idea of using a vacuum flask for hot water too as above.......

Currently on the (new 2 nd hand) boat have gas and the luxury of an oven. Just can't currently justify the expense of ditching a perfectly good new gas oven for an Origo oven: they're not cheap!

Those are certainly about as safe as you can get for meths - made for the job, and I do use one for light weight camping when I use a Trangia stove which needs filling every time you use it.

There are also some Aluminum ones around, but I'm not sure if they are actually suitable for Meths.

I like the idea of the bottle holder.

I took a small gas stove off my boat, like the one pictured above when I read the Hampshire Trading Standards warning about use afloat.

I went with an Origio with gimbals.

It pays to remove the meths holder and fill it outside by holding it vertical and filling so it doesn't overflow. Any spills don't end up in the stove or around it.

The rubber mat is a godsend. Use it to seal the meths after every use. We find that without it the whole boat smells of meths. Note the burner cools down quite a bit faster than the job above it. I usually replace the rubber 10 mins after use.

+ 1 for boiling a whole kettle and using excess water for washing up.

They don't work well with meths. I light the gas lighter and use that to light the meths. The gas is on for such a short time that I only need a refill every couple of seasons.

-1 for that idea ... only boil enough for what you intend using; if you do have any left over put it in a thermos flask for later.

exactly what i was thinking
i pour into cup first then into kettle
maybe slightly more...obvious really cause im a tight sod!

Cookers

Hi Dylan I have not seen a famous Origo before your movie so thanks. As already said the stack of boxes would be a bit iffy. I would go for a lower level for the cooker (one box under) this will get it more out of the wind and more stable and perhaps if any spillage of hot water etc it will be down lower. Yes also as said a stainless steel shield around the cooker would be well worth having in case of splatter or flare up.
I have thought that if I started again on my boat I would make a sliding cooking unit that came from under the entry steps/ cockpit. It is an advantage to have headroom where you cook and of course good ventilation. Mine as designed by the builder is ahead of the port bunk in a cupboard arrangement coming out abeam from the hull the back of which is the chainplate bulkhead.
I have a single burner meths cooker. This style has a tank and you open the valve to run some meths into a cup shut off the valve light the meths until the tubes have heated when you can open the valve for vapourised meths to burn. A bit like a parafin cooker. It is a bit slow compared to gas but smell has never been a problem with ordinary hardware bought meths.
Anyway mine is a completely different sailing style and the cooker resides in the shed. But it does still work nicely after 25 years.
Persevere with design you will know what you want eventually. But yes you should consider a wood burning heater with a chimney if you are going sailing in winter. Core it is winter here temps 2 to 19 and I am complaining about the cold. I wouldn't dream of sailing. olewill
