I just bought a new origo as I found them on Amazon at a price lower than I've seen before. Had a near miss at the weekend so made a decision.

What fuel works well that doesn't smell too much?

Thanks VicS - I wasnt sure if Bio Fuel and Meths were the same, obvious "how long is a piece of string" answers aside - using the stove for occasional use, does the fuel last a reasonable time? Thinking an initial 4L stockup.

As a matter of interest, what other ethanol is available to buy? I assumed it was all produced by fermentation, but perhaps I'm wrong.

Probably the ethanol in our familiar "meths" is made by hydration of ethylene.... ????

If left for any length of time fuel evaporation is your worst enemy unless you have the rubber caps to cover the fuel reservoirs. I don't have them and could do with some. I've also got some flame spreaders on order.......or more like permanent back order it would seem. Mines quite an old Origo...1986, so did not have these refinements. Otherwise its as good as new.

I've ordered some of the Marine EkoFuel, so we'll see how that goes. Gimbals and pot holders on the way also - might as well do the whole job in one hit!

Feeling safer already :)

Availability from Bodgit & Quit and Gone Outside is variable. When they have it the price is generally good but you can't rely on a particular store having it on stock

Buying from the spirit fire fuel suppliers online is more consistently reliable

The aforementioned rubber seal pads are a must when the boat is left for more than a few days

Don't make the mistake a lot of new origo users make of under filling the burners, they work best if they're refilled fully when they're not quite empty (as soon as we notice that the flame has started to decline a bit in goes a litre of ethanol - we use the slightly more expensive 1l squeezy bottles for ease and convenience)

L'alcool à brûler

That's the stuff- my brother-in-law who lives in Brussels buys me a batch in Calais when he comes over- very little smell (it's meths without the purple smelly dye)

Its not the dye that smells

The familiar smell of purple meths is due to the deliberate addition of nasty smelling substances such as crude pyridine. (Pyridine is one of those things that makes you very unpopular in a chemistry lab as soon as you take the cap off the bottle!)

In fact the addition of pyridine and other smelly substances , or for that matter the purple dye, is no longer a requirement in the UK

Presumably it is these changes that makes the sale of non dyed, sweet smelling bioethanol legal. Go back more than a couple of years or so and it would not have been legal in the UK to sell the bioethanol which is now available.

They did at certain large warehouse stores but are you sure they still do?

At the three b and q stores near us the bioethanol comes in to stock quite sporadically. When it does come in it is in small quantities and always sells quickly. Hence whenever i see some i buy a couple and store it.
