Can any one tell me how these are meant to be orgnised. I have attached them to see how they work, but if I have them pointing up then when I life and release they foul on the catch knob! Should I mount the gimbals at an angle?

Not clear is it!!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I mounted mine pointing up however they are mounted in such a position above the surface so that when the gimbals are unlatched to fall to the lower position where they foul then at this point the 3000 sits firmly on the work surface.

This makes cooking in port a doddle and also makes it easier to open the Origo to remove the cans for refilling.

PS Don t forget to either add 10% water to the fuel to reduce fumes or apply to customs and excise for a licence to buy the corrrect spec denatured alchohol..You might be rationed to about 30 litres per annum /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Thank you, I have seen a few pictures on a couple of sites and that appears to be what the others did, mine is replacing an old Flavel so there is a large space, don't think I should mount it low enough to rest on the base. How far from the back did you mount it?

is this possible? we use denatured alchohol procured from France...but it would be very nice not to have to keep doing so. It's become a real joke that where other people go over for beer and wine bargains we go for cooking fuel!

Yes it is possible to buy Industrial Denatured Alchohol IDA but you have to apply to HM Customs for authorisation. Get a copy of Public notice 473 from HM Customs which has all the details.

The phone number to call is 0845-010-9000.

The process may take a few weeks but eventually you get permission and a License number. You have to give a copy of this to your supplier which in my case was Anderson Gibb in Edinburgh.

They may supply 2 different strengths so go for the lower one which I think from memory is 90% .

Quite a performance but not the pong of meths though not totally pong free and also no soot.

Oh yes....lots cheaper than those chandler 500 cc bottles of meths:)

Mine replaced a Flavel on a Westerly Chieftain...Like a Centaur but with aft cabin.

I mounted so in the gimballed position it was on the same centre line as the flavel which allowed enough room for it to swing down to the lower position where it is about 5 mm off the base.

In this postion it is easy to unclip and swing the upper section out of the way to remove the cans. I also use this position when in port as it is more stable but is low if kids are around.

Re: IDA licence

very interesting - so I have read the HM Customs notice and tried to understand it. I think it says:

CDA (=purple meths) - users don't need a licence and can use it for heating, lighting etc.

IDA - need a licence and CANNOT use for heating and lighting (cooking?)

Plus, licensed users of IDA need to keep records of quantities and what they used it for.

So how does a licence help those of us with Origo stoves?

Confused of Cambridge.

Have you mounted the gimbals so they have the up position and also swung down and behind position?????

In the up position with the mount all in line and highest position the gimbal pins should be at about the same height as the the pins were on the Flavel.

When you swing it back and downwards to the lower poaition it then sits where you say yours is ????????

When mine is in this lower position it is about 75 cms clear of the back of the boat moulding which is adequate space to swing the top up and back to allow removing the fuel containers for refilling. The base is sitting on the top of the moulding in my case.
