Orcas attack Robin Knox-Johnston

Just wondering if the underwater profile of these yachts resembles the fins of sharks or whales and that’s possibly why they are attacked.

We are all for items that have dual use.

We use red antifoul as helicopter crew mention that when looking for lost yachts in weather that for an inverted yacht red stands out but white, blue, green etc simply merge into the seascape. How whales view red antifoul - I have no idea - but it would not be difficult for authorities to make a quick assessment of AF colours of yachts 'attacked'.

There is the thought that 'we ain't seen nothing yet' if whales are mistaking yachts, some of which are quite large, for sharks.

Not much going on for leisure boats in the winter down there so surprised the whales managed to pick them out.
Some I expect were hoping that the off season would wean them off the novelty . Looks like it's here to stay for the time being.

There's a pretty active data gathering process going on here : Orca Interaction and Uneventful Passage Report Results | CA

Reports include things such as AF colour, motor on/off, etc etc. The hope being that once enough data is received, some trends can be spotted.

I had a look at the stats - red seemed to have a low incidence of an attack - but that might be because red is not popular (for owners). Dark colours, black, green, blue, did seem popular to the Orcas. Or did I miss something?

What must be gratifying (and has nothing to do with Orcas) for AMC are the large number of yachts boasting Copper Coat, which given the oft negative comment in this august forum I found quite interesting.

I nice statistical project for someone.

It's a shame they didn't ask about antifoul age. It's possible new antifoul smells different.

The data just seems to be a representation of boats that were there in the area so not many conclusions to be drawn by the look of it.
