Has anyone had success in the USA in refilling the orange Calor tanks that you get as part of the UK propane tank exchange program? I have two 3.9kg bottles that fit perfectly in my gas locker, and I cannot find anything affordable in that size as a replacement. Best I can find is $120usd/per tank...

We inherited a white propane bottle and were told that had it been bought in America when the boat was there. We were told they won't fill orange, or indeed any other colour and thus to keep it. That was six years ago and we couldn't get it filled in England.

Big places who run by the numbers will not touch them BUT I found that if you went to a back street sort of place they would fill them IF you have an adaptor they can screw into.

This was in the late 90s. I had both Blue and Red bottles filled with the same gas and my Flavel cooker ran OK regardless.

This was on and around the ICW from Key West to Washington DC.

No chance of a refill of any cylinder unless it has an Overfill Prevention Valve. These are identified by having a triangular valve handle.

I threw away my Calor propane cylinder and bought a cheap USA steel one, with a regulator to suit. If you can run to the aluminum cylinder they are vastly superior the the steel - no rust!
