So everything is going great with the Westerly Longbow and should be launching within a month. Which has got me thinking and planning the interior out to make her more welcoming to guests and one thing I would like is a Teak and Holly effect cabin sole stretching into the vee berth.

What are the options both budget wise and ease of application you have tried. I will be laying straight onto the current GRP floor and obviously want access to the bilge hatches etc

Measurements are:

Main Saloon - 980mm x 2445mm fairly rectangle shape

Outside the head 485mm x 560mm

Vee Berth - 1100mm x 800mm Max but odd shaped

Regards

Nothing that glues to the GRP floor will look good except for carpet. Teak and Holly needs to be on a ply backing to remain stable. If you are going that route then make new ply floorboards and laminate a synthetic teak and holly onto it. Available from Robbins Timber. Not cheap and a lot of work, but is what many production builders use/

The only stuff which looks any good is teak and holly faced plywood, but it's nightmarishly expensive. I'd tell you how much, but Robbin's website is down.

I made a nice teak and holly striped cabin sole for my smaller Westerly using an offcut from Howell's of Poole, who in those days supplied what we used to call the "British boat building industry". Since that's now reduced to making gin palace brothels for Russian mafiosi, the supply of offcuts has probably dried up, but it might be worth asking a local boatbuilder if they have any bits, or if they would like to split a sheet with you.

My current boat has teak and holly for the cabin sole. As I do not wish to live in a cigar box, I plan to carpet over it.

I had Robbins "proper" holly & teak, and it's transformed the boat. The guy who did it for me is an artist in wood, and the stripes line up all through the boat. Yes it was expensive, but it's gorgeous and easy to look after. I put UCP on first, and Goldspar gloss (neither are now available) and once every couple of seasons, I apply another coat whilst leaving the boat on a Sunday afternoon - it can be done with a 2" brush and takes about 20 minutes. You have to plan your exit so that you don't paint yourself into a corner!

I made my own using strips of in my case iroko and jacaranda wood glued to ply backing.

Real teak and holly might need the ply backing, but what about the T&H effect laminate? That's plastic itself, I can't see why it should be unstable if glued to more plastic.

Might be a bit tricky to cut to size in situ; when going onto ply boards you can stick it down slightly oversize and then run a laminate trimmer around the edge. Best start with a template in cardboard or something.

The laminate trimmer might work for cutting out the hatches and for covering the hatch lids. Bit hard to tell without seeing how they're constructed.

Anyone know if there is a vinyl (lino) version available?

That is the stuff referred to in post#4 It is US sourced and interestingly nobody imports it into the UK officially, despite this country being a good market for fake teak. From the prices I have seen, it is not cheap, but the photos of finished jobs look quite good.

I believe you can get Amtico or Karndean strip floor in teak and a white strip to go between the "planks" to give a holly effect. Not cheap though. There are some images on the web.
