With some nervousness, can I seek the Forum's view on the value of this Notices this Mariners page

http://www.crossingthethamesestuary.com/page9.html

East Coast bespoke for Wash to the Goodwins, I have plans to integrate PLA, HHA, Medway Ports NtM as possible and to try to link notices to the appropriate Admiralty Leisure charts and Imray charts. Since I do not have every chart in these ranges I will only be able to go as far as saying a Notice is within the area covered by chart such and such.

There are some production fiddlies to attend to such as the slight jump on transitions which annoys me intensely and I will add a supplementary page to make the exact coverage quite clear. I have a list of Admiralty Chart Numbers from The Wash to the Goodwins that I will monitor and that needs to be displayed. An image of the areas covered might help as well.

Any suggestions or comment is - err - welcome I think!

It's up to date but obviously still experiemental.

WDYT?

I was trying to update all my Imray charts today from their website but found that some of the charts I purchased last year have now been replaced so the Imray chart corrections do no go back as far as I need.

Whilst you mention Imray charts in the description what I could not see was the Imray Chart numbers in the corrections - maybe I am looking in the wrong place?

No, sorry Peter, I haven't got that far. Although I can do some from Imray's Digital Pilot to which I refer on one image, I need to wait for Imray's latest Digital Chart (which is on way) so that I can see which Admiralty notices apply to which chart once out of the immediate Estuary area.

It's helpful to know what people would use - so if for every notice there was a reference to the Admiralty Leisure Chart and Imray chart affected would that help?

You will find all the UKHO notices are either in the 2010 or 2011 list so it would be a case of going through the area breakdowns at the moment I'm afraid. But that's better than looking at 58 notices - which obviously I've done.

V useful. Could the page allow a filter on depths in time? For example... I ignore notices that tell me a 12m depth is reduced to a 9m depth - but I take notice if 5m became 2m!!

thanks for this - will save me time for one.

That's an interest idea! I have been thinging about 'conditional' notices. For example, the fact that the Sunk Deep Water achorage is foul in one small spot where the average depth is 25m is kind of unimportant to us (watch someone now take me to task!) but I find that it is difficult to be wise in every event. For example I recall there was a reduction in depth off the entrance to the King George V lock from 2 metres something to one metre something. Does that matter? I suspect that it does not but it would probably be safer to assume it does?

I am thinking that each notice ought to have a heading showing charts affected in the Main Admiralty range, their Leisure folios and Imrays charts and folios. The first and third will be easy to do and I can do the second if I also monitor the Leisure Notices.

I don't tend to use the chart numbers - just try to remember if I have a chart of a particular area, and for the patch you are covering the answer is always yes.

Having several years worth of corrections would certainly be handy.

Just added links to Admiralty Leisure and Imray Folios and relevant charts. OK the layout of the page isn't very good yet but I am trying to sort out the functionality - then I can tidy it up. Peter, does that help your point?

As to acquiring several years. It is easy to let the Main Admiralty Notices to Mariners to accumulate from now. To retain a historical list of the Leisure charts, I would need to note when a new print is being done and capture the latest weekly notice and archive it. Shouldn't be too difficult if it serves a purpose.

WOW thanks!

Now working on the principle that the difficult you can do but the impossible may take a bit longer is there a way of getting information on changes from previous chart issues? I can't find the info to update my 1 year old charts which have now been reissued and I'd hate to have to replace them so soon!!

Then the next step is to get the updates onto the chart without me putting pen to paper! :D

I think the problem is that when chart manufacturer's reprint/reissue a chart they remove all the Notices integrated in the reprint as part of the idea of compelling you to buy new! The exception is the weekly Admiralty notices which are available in bulk back to 2003 - but not of course searchable by chart number.

I suspect I probably could ask contacts within Imray but given some of the help they are providing it would be a bit naughty. However, all the Admiralty 2010 notices are there, so if you scanned down the comments in the right hand column, you could decide which ones are important and then check if they are a relevant area. That would certainly get you the latest bit of the Gunfleet Sands Windfarm and the Goodwin Sands/Gull Stream in blocks which you could print out. They are downloadable as either a jpg or pdf.

Get out your pen! You know you want to.... You were trained for it....
