Opinions on Ullswater

Thanks SealegsJim. I might investigate further! Do you know if anyone there is currently looking to get rid of some mooring tackle suitable for a 3 ton boat?

No sorry, I haven't been over for a year or two as I am now at Windermere. Best to go over and have a chat with the boat owners - it will have to be early spring as they won,t be there at this time. Alternatively you could contact Blackstock Estates who administer the place. I'm sorry but I don't have their number. You can always lay, or have laid, your own mooring providing there is available space.

I have been on Ullswater for 18 yrs and the best place to keep your boat on a swinging mooring is without doubt The Old Church. It's quiet with beautiful new facilities and about the same price as as Ullswater Marine and Fairfield Marine. The former is not to be recommended; issues with the operator -just ask anyone and Fairfield is a bit run down and launch recovery is subject to a good head of water but that is where my boat (a Beneteau First 285) was taken out and stored for the winter. Incidentally, the moorings at The Old Church are individually owned by the boat owners and there are often one or two for sale - just ask.
I have just sold my swinging mooring for £50.

Don't tell everyone about Old Church! The fabulous hotel is now a private house.

I must say it is one of the most secluded bays I have found and having the best shore facilities in Cumbria.
I am in my fifth year, a newcomer, have just said goodbye to a mooring owner of forty years.

Ullswater Marine are great folk. I bought my current boat from them and have received courteous service and advice
from Will Grundy. Does anyone remember the the Water Ski Championships in the 50's. Will's grandfather chased us off
the water ski jump. I am told that Keith Hall, who gave a demonstration of barefoot waterskiing, now pursues gentler water
activities.

As a member of the Ullswater Yacht Club, I did request and was refused storage for my Beneteau First 285 as it was over their 26
foot limit. A commercial opportunity missed? They are a welcoming Club run by members for the members.

Ullswater is a place to chill.

I have moved from Ullswater to Windermere in April this year. Prime reason for moving was the shortewr travel time to Windermere (Fell Foot) for me. I was a member of the Ullswater Sailing Club. The main benefits of the club were:
1. easy access moorings close to the club
2. facilities - change room, toilets, bar, and food available.
3. extensive racing programme (although not for me).
4. launch and retrieval can be carried out by club for relatively small charge. A big hit with me and you do not need to attend.
5. winter standings sfor boats on large field(s) and you can work on your boat when out of the water.
6. fairly secure with gate locked in winter (code for members).
Main downside for me was the wash from the steamers affecting the moorings although likely to be the same at the other moorings.
