Opinions on Rodman 1120

I currently have a Hardy fishing 24 but am looking for something bigger with an open cockpit for fishing and weekend accommodation for 4.
I have narrowed the search down and am favouring a 2nd hand Rodman 1120 although I have never seen one in the flesh. (Have looked at bigger & smaller Rodmans plus other makes of similar size)

Any 1120 owners out there ?
Anyone got any advice ?

I want one - really great seakeeping and good space but limited accomadation/crusing set up relative to it's length.

There are a few on the market right now - some seriously equipped for fishing and others pretty basic.

I suspect I am more likely to move on to a Botnia Targa 27.1 or 30 first as a 37 is a lot more marina/berthing cost.

I already sent a PM to 'simongoldthorpe' after seeing your posts from last year prior to him buying the 1120. He hasn't replied. Doesn't seem like he has visited this site since end 2004. Probably having too much fun on his new boat !

The 1120's reputed seakeeping is my main reason for seeking out owners. People say my Hardy is a good seaboat but I think it handles like a pig on roller skates. It's so subjective. But the Hardy is my first boat so I have nothing to compare it with. Maybe I expect too much, after all it is only a little boat.

I've seen a few 1120's advertised but suspect that some of them are the same boat. I reckon there are maybe 2 or 3 for sale in UK. I think 'simongoldthorpe' got the best one out there. I saw it on a website today, marked up as sold. Still on the site though he bought it last year. It looked fantastic from the pictures.

Regarding the Targa's. I know I've been overtaken rapidly by a couple of them when I thought I was making good progress in choppy conditions !! They go like the clappers !
 
Looked at the 1120 at the boat show and been out on the 1250.While at SIBS this week compared the Rodman 1120, Jeanneau 32 and the Antares 9.80.My preference for a spartan fisher type of thing was the Rodman,but for a bit of extra comfort the Prestige would be my choice.Loads of Rodmans HERE
 
good way of putting it!

I think the Antares 1080 would be my compromise - and plenty around so a choice of SH.

1180 looks nice but although 180k is OK for a boat that size it's pretty spartan again in the cruising / staying onboard stakes and you will want to add a fair number of extras. Also it's a pretty wide beam!
 
The worst thing about some of them is the narrow sidedecks going foreward the top of the wheel house was doing its best to help me over the side

I didn't see an 1120 at the Southampton boat show. Don't think it was there at least not with the other Rodmans.
I also had the Prestige & Antares 9.8 on my list & have looked at them both. The Antares is interesting & well priced. Apparently it has a good hull & is economical. My main use for the new boat would still primarily be fishing with cruising as an additional benefit.
The 1120 just looks so much more like a fishing boat. I wouldn't feel silly in the Eastbourne locks getting out my tackle (fishing) I would feel a bit silly say in the Prestige which is definitely more cruise than fish. I think the Antares comes between the two.
I also looked at the Faeton 11.8 (Stelican) at Southampton and it is a nice looking boat but I understand it is pretty new hence a very limited second hand market. They have a Sessa Dorado 32 at Eastbourne which also looks good but again it is a very new boat.
I think I'll look closer at both the Antares 9.8 & 10.8 (Duncan) before I decide for sure to go for the Rodman. One downside of the 1120 I believe is the heavy comparative fuel consumption but this is probably due to its weight which surely contributes to it's good handling. Isn't everything such a compromise !

I believe the relatively heavy fuel consumption is due to the very deep v hull rather than the weight. 22 degrees at the transom springs to mind.

This is a price I am happy to bear. Put with the relatively sparse accomadation for a boat 37ft long and you can see why it hasn't appealed to the 'floating caravan with occassional fair weather trips to a sheltered sunny bay' brigade! The sheltered wheelhouse, excellent all round visability from the lower helm and widewalkround decks don't score many marks with them either.......... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
