Just received details of the enforcement exercise that took place on 1st April.
6 Environment Agency staff on 2 patrol launches covered both banks of the river from from Kingston Bridge down to Teddington Lock issuing notices on unregistered vessels.
They were supported by 16 Met. Police officers, both afloat on 2 Met launches and ashore on both banks.
A total of 80 notices were issued and the Met also detected a number of river related crimes.

They went BELOW Teddington lock and I would imagine the lions share came from there, whether this was the right thing to do remains to be seen as it conflicts with a a fair bit of info on their site relating to licensing below the lock.

Why "Brook" ???

Is one of the EA dudes a bit of a "Brooke Shields" fan?

...or Chinese and wants to throw the "brook" at them?

I heard from a witness that they were heavy-handed, agressive, and unhelpful.

The police support would not board vessels as they had no legal right or cause which resulted in enforcement notices being issued to boats which were correctly displaying current registration facing the river.

They also issued a notice to at least one owner who had recently towed his vessel through Molesey Lock and had his money refused by the lock-keeper as the vessel was under construction.

Rightly or wrongly they were targetting a "type"

Incidentally further up in leafy Surrey I haven't had an enforcement notice yet even though I am STILL waiting for my licence to be sent back from Reading; I gather the office is somewhat understaffed

I was told last weekend by a EA employee that they had seconded a relief lockie into the craft registration office to help clear the backlog.

I think they are still in a huge mess though as after their quick efficient repayment of my boat licence within two days following my loss (they ofered the refund without being asked)

HOWEVER they have now ruined that by sending me a replacement licence last Friday for the same boat!
