I have an old JRC 1500 radar that it would be useful to connect to OpenCPN via NMEA. I can't find any ref to it though.

Can anyone tell me if it is possible

Thanks

You'll have to be more specific than "connect". What are you actually trying to achieve?

I expect you can probably get a lat and long from OpenCPN into the radar, quite likely waypoints too.

You cannot get the radar picture into OpenCPN.

It looks like the unit will receive some NMEA messages from instruments or may be outputted data from OpenCPN fro display on the radar screen.

This is similar to a SIMRAD LCD radar I have but there is no output of any radar screen data for display on any PC display

Page 22 to 24 of the manual seems to show connection info.

OpenCPN can only take a picture from a recent radar that sends its data via an ethernet connection. And even then it's limited to the radar types the development team have tackled.

The JRC1500 only has NMEA inputs, so you might be able to input position, heading, waypoints, etc.

Think that's so. I had one several years ago. I seem to recall it will display an active waypoint and not a lot else from other talkers. I don't think there's any way it can output to a plotter, laptop or much else. Reasonable bit of kit for what it does, but very much standalone.

From the manual

3.6.2 EXTERNAL SYSTEM INTERFACE
The RADAR 1500 MK2 will interface with any NAV-AID (GPS or LORAN)and compass with the standard NMEA0182 or NMEA0183 output.
The inputs
from the NAV-AID must be digital data conforming to the NMEA0183 formats
to drive various radar features such as waypoint mode. If more than one datatype is present at the radar input (for example; compass and NAV-AID) a priority
system has been established in the radar's software to respond to the inputs in driving the features. The assigned priorities are set in this manner:

HEADING:
1. Compass (NMEA0183 "HDG,HDM,HDT,VHW")
2. NAV-AID (NMEA0183 "RMC,RMA,VTG")
POSITION:
1. NAV-AID (NMEA0l83 "RMC,RMA,GLL,GTD")
SPEED:
1. NAV-AID (NMEA0183 "RMC,RMA,VTG")
2. Compass (NMEA0183 "VHW")
WAYPOINT:
1. NAV-AID (NMEA0183 "RMB,BWC")
