Thanks to you guys again for getting my lappy up and running with the above.
I tried looking at the UK charts and they were fine but had one little query which you may be able to help with.
I noticed that when navigating toward a large harbour the Inner harbour chart did not appear ( as a detailed chart with soundings) until I clicked into the harbour and then I got the proper large scale chart.
When I tried to zoom out it reverted to the original small scale chart without soundings in the harbour.
I would have liked to simple reduce the viewing scale by zooming out but retaining the soundings.
Perhaps the solution is to force the inner harbour chart to be the only one available and then I may be able to zoom out without the system switching on the smaller scale chart?
How can I do this? I could do it with the old Seaclear system.
Thanks

zoom in out with a mouse wheel

You can have a play around with the cm93 detail slider. It's in options|charts|vector charts or just press "D" and it should appear on the main screen. Increasing the detail should get the soundings on but but can get pretty cluttered with the detail set too high. I haven't quite got my head around chart quilting yet but might have a look at the manual now, see if that could help as well.
It's well worth digging into the manual, i keep finding more stuff it can do, very powerful program for free

I have my depths set to match the Admiralty charts i am used to, so the shaded depths are similar

There should be a toolbar at the bottom of the screen with different coloured boxes; left click to select specific charts, right click to popup an option to hide a chart. Playing aound with these should give you what you are looking for - e.g. right clicking and hiding the small scale chart should leave the zoomed out large scale chart.

I thought that as well but actually reading TFM for once apparently that's not the case when the charts are cm93 only .. if so then there just a yellow box in the status bar

http://opencpn.org/ocpn/chart_quilting

The exception to the last rule is CM93 charts. When an area is only covered by CM93 charts, indicated by a long yellow chart button in the status bar, and in quilting mode, no info-box is displayed and no reddish highlighting is taking place.

The developers are always on the lookout for usability and feature requests.

I may add some of the recent ideas here at some point to see what users think. Recently OpenCPN became the first chartplotter to support AIS distress beacons.

Slight aside but there are some very handy layers available to download here including UK & France ais beacons. Met office sea areas are good as well, just download and copy to C:\ProgramData\opencpn\layers . You might have to make the folder "layers". If it's linux you'll be able to find it all by yourself ;) Or just to try them out create a temp layer (layers tab in route manager) and import but that won't be there next time you boot up.

Do you think that NTMs will ever get issued as GPX or KML files as well as chartlets? Would be handy.

i am stoopid. i cant configure those add ons.
i have opened a "new folder" in open cpn but those add ons dont show up

I've got Havel-Oder-Wasserstraße working, but bit clunky. you have to zoom right close in then the prog seems to do a sort of database rebuild and you can see the chart, but disappears if you zoom out again. Oh no! RTFM time again, thats twice in 2 days  Try turning chart quilting off, that seems to help a bit.

edit - PS Ta V much for the link

the dutch charts do the same as your experience

+1 Great find

I found that having unzipped (this is all on Windoze) one of the ENC .zip files, I copied all the included files into thier own directory. Then add that directory to OpenCPN using Toolbox > Charts > Add Selection and 'force a database rebuild'. Finally zoom to an area covered by the ENC files loaded, I loaded this lot 'ENC Kaarten Nederland 2013' so zooming in to the Roompot area starts add the new charts in to the quilt. As conachair says, zooming in and out seems to force ingestion of these new charts into the quilt. Currently centred about 5nm NE of Veere and showing 7 new chartlets in green with the CM93 charts at 1/100000.

Not sure if this is egg sucking stuff :)
