Open CPN on ubuntu?

'nother noobie Mint question.

I am running Linux Mint 14 and have managed to get my head around installing OpenCPN. After much searching, I've discovered that the plugins need to copied to usr/lib/opencpn and when I try do that, it won't let me because I don't have permission to write to that folder. How do I change the permissions of that folder without screwing things up?

On a command line something like 'sudo mv /xxx/xxx /xxx/xxx'; you'll be asked for your password but it should work... heres a link that might help .. http://askubuntu.com/questions/441631/sudo-mv-fromdir-todir-not-recognizing-the-fromdir-location

RobbieW's response is the one to use.
Opening up permissions on files and directories to the world is a rocky road.

Thanks. I've since rebooted and the permissions went back to the default. Wish I knew more about how that happened.
