open cpn on a tablet?

I am currently using a net book which doubles as a chart plotter (with all the charts of the world and an external gps). Most people seem to be switching to tablets and many are using navionics... Is there a solution whereby a tablet can run all the charts through open cpn?

I am considering the new sony tablet; its supposed to be waterproof, it would just be good to know if my charts can be used?

Providing the tablet is running an OS supported by Open CPN (e.g. Windows) there is no reason why not.

Yes. They were very expensive - which is why I don't want to lose them if I switch to a tablet!

OpenCPN works with CM93v2 only, which are no longer updated and are getting old.

I have one of the new Sony 'waterproof' tablets and use it as a chartplotter. It's android so won't run OpenCPN and I doubt your chart format will work with either navionics or plan2nav (but maybe worth a check on their websites).

I know it is not quite what the OP wanted but there is the option of running OpenCPN on your PC/Laptop/. . . and using WiFi to your iPad/tablet. Air Display (and other Apps) let you mirror whatever is on your PC to your tablet - or using the tablet as a second monitor.
This lets you see AIS etc on both the PC and Tablet - but it does restrict you to Cmap93 charts. I will still rely on my chartplotter but use the OpenCPN/iPad for AIS and gross error checking. Cheers Andrew.

(I've just discovered that if you're using OpenCPN via Air Display you need to disable OpenGL for it to work.)

Well, OpenCPN does work with a number of open formats, as BSB and some vector formats. Of CM93, only v2 is supported.

In one thread at Cruisers Forum, it is describes how OpenCPN can work directly on an Andriod tablet. Catch is, one has to take total command of the OS, which is not attrative on a new tablet.

As an alternative, Navionics on tablet is not expensive and quite useful. Still, there are some issues.

I use splashtop to see my PC running OpenCPN. I think Splashtop is free. Navionics on the Android table works really well and is very affordable.
