The internal memory on my Samsung tablet is quite low so I would like to save the charts to the sd card instead. I know you can do this with the Free Version of Open CPN but can you do it with the paid for version? If so what are the advantages of the paid for version or should I just stick with the free version as I have installed on my Laptop.

It might depend upon which charts you use but provided you tell OpenCPN where to find the charts then it will be able to use them. Charts which have some kind of copy protection might be different but if they work from SD in the free version I'm sure they will work from SD in the paid-for version.

Free version is ancient in the world of programming , there were some changes to android AFAIK which made it difficult to point to free version to external memory, never tried it so don't know for sure.
Considering the low cost it seems to make much more sense to go with the supported official version, also dunno what plugins are on the old free one, official one has grib for starters.

One your laptop you can get the latest version free ( & give them something if you want) , it's only the android version which isn't free.

ok thanks for that it sounds like the paid for version is the way to go then. There is a plugin now for downloading official charts so I was just wondering whether anyone had experience of using the plugin and pointing it to the SD card. It would be a shame to have all the available space on an SD card and not actually be able to use it.

We have a couple of Tablets. I keep all my charts, layers, way points etc on an SD card. No issues. Nit please support the project and get the paid for Android version.

Thanks for the replies guys I am reassured by the fact I can put the charts on the sd card so will indeed buy the paid for version and the ukFrance charts. Now that I've wired the quark up I'm looking forward to the benefits of ais collision detection. Not that I've ever come close to colliding with any ships but this year will be my first time crossing the channel.
