Now having a 2006 almanac, i've been turning my attention to Oostende in May...
We are hoping to extend the weekend a little....
Our initial thoughts are to leave from Oostende, Nth towards Vlissingen(Flushing) which is only 29nm, then through the Walcheren Canal to Middleburg (5nm) meant to be well worth a visit..., out into the Oostechelde, and then back out into the Nth sea at Roompot (10nm)..... perhaps on Wed/Thurs for a crossing back to Harwich/Deben or perhaps south a little to the Blackwater or Crouch....
I can recommend Zierikzee if you're going that way - a lovely town on the north side of the Oosterschelde, just west of the Zeelandbrugge. Middleburg looks nice, but I've no direct experience as we went in and out via Roompotsluis. Shared with this biggie on our way out a few weeks back:
Quite like the sound of Middelburg.... right in the middle of the town, and nice easy travelling, no tides to worry about until you get back into the Oosterschelde... great for the kids too.....
As for the Oosterschelde itself.... everywhere I look, and everyone I talk to, seem to suggest Zierikzee rather than Roompot as the overnight before dashing back to Harwich..... depends on how easy and regular the Roompotsluis is I guess!
The lock is very regular and 24hours, I think. Turn up, radio and if you have to wait I'd be suprised as it never seems very busy. Lock can take a little while to cycle though, so if you arrive just after its shut and started a cycle, I guess you could be waiting for 40mins or so. There can be a few knots of tide through the oosterschelde, as I recall.
I've got the BPR (books 1 and 2) and inland waterway charts (2005) if they're any help (though would need to retrieve them from the boat).
Well, we're thinking about it... but it will be a long old trip in Vreny (a Stella). Maybe we'll book some time off work and see what the weather is like. (Might be a little more certain when keelbolts back in place and she's in the water... see how much she leaks this year
Well I motored there and back, so I know they can /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
NAS, was talking to Yanita at the boat show, we should meet for those interested to work out an itinerary and days for the extended bit. Got any suggestions for date and venue? Ipswich area maybe?
