Oops...

Lucky nobody was aboard. (I am amazed that no-one on the offending vessel seemed to be looking to check that was the case.)

'LEUCA - Moments of panic in the afternoon at the tourist port of Santa Maria di Leuca, marina of Castrignano del Capo in the province of Lecce, where a maxi 40-meter yacht crashed into the quay, destroying a sailboat moored at the third arm waiting to be demolished. No injuries are recorded. Some migrants had arrived on that sailboat months ago.

The impact occurred under the incredulous eyes of many boaters. On board the large Portuguese-flagged yacht, which was doing the docking maneuver at one of the docks, was a group of foreign tourists.

It seems that the impact was caused by a sudden failure of the electrical system, which made the boat ungovernable.
Men from the Guardia Costiera di Leuca who are in charge of investigating the incident intervened on the spot.'

What is it with mobos (and cruise liners) and ‘sudden electrical failures’? I mean, my car doesn’t suddenly lose all its electrics, and nor do planes or trains. Or is this just a euphemistic way of saying ‘unforeseen cockup’?

Because a lot of modern boats are 'fly by wire'.

We have one boat that has what we call a disconnect on a not uncommon basis when operating from the bridge wing. Not a big problem as you just have to retake command at the helm and transfer it back to the wing, the problems start if it happens in close quarter maneuvering.

It's like the sudden and mysterious accelerator failures which old people experience as their cars barrel into shop windows. Nothing to do with getting the accelerator and brake pedals mixed up, oh dear me no.
