Re: Me too! nm

I like Spinnaker Tower as well. Maybe we should start a separate user group "FRiends Of Spinnaker Tower" - FROST.

There was an interesting prog on R4 about it a few weeks ago. Apparently engineered to take a full-on collision from a Cross Channel ferry. Wonder how long before those calcs are put to the test?

Re: Spinnaker Tower

Have no objection to the tower, it's that they can never build to budget, why can't we get an estimate and that's it, full stop. Over budget they pay, after all if they cannot cost a job, they should not be in business. We have a local park and ride, estimate to build £750,000, cost £4.300,000, why does everything go the same way on costs.
How do you get these jobs were you can charge 3-5 times what you quote, get paid, not be a TV programme on business methods, and everyone say what a good job you did?????????????????.

Re: Oh Dear now you done it

I quite agree with you snowleopard and the others. I think ellen is doing a fantastic thing - as for the negativity, well, she's a hell of a lot more upbeat than I would be after 65 days of sleep deprivation and being battered senseless. I can't understand what the issue with all the technology is - probably the same reason why some people still think GPS is a worrying development, despite being almost 15 years old! Every sport has its 'unlimited' class - I bet the same people think using jet engines for the land speed record was 'Cheating' -"in my day it was all done in a morris minor, bla, bla ,bla"
Even lefty economists agree with the need for a 'feel good' factor and adventure is just that. 1990's / 2000 Britian would not have supported the Wright brothers, Bill Gates, NASAs space program, Henry Ford or thousands of other visionarys who have changed the world we live in (mostly for the better - but thats a separate argument!). This is why America leads the world in these things - they support visionaries not hammer them back down into the pack at every oportunity. This attitude is why britain will always be an average place to live an average life, and never excell at anything. Occasionaly this country does breed people, like Ellen, who are so driven that they ignore the doomsayers and whingers and just do it anyway.
Give me Ellen, Spinaker towers and other pointless things any day of the week. Its alot more enriching to most peoples lives than throwing another couple of billion pounds into the NHS or education black hole. Besides in this case the money comes from B&Q! not the taxpayer.

Good luck to Ellen I say. Vive le Visionaries /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Spinnaker Tower

If only it were that simple! In my experience (as a QS), with public projects such as this what the estimate was for and what the final cost is for are two completely different things. After the client has finished mucking around with the design, deciding to change the scope of works, the extent etc etc etc (all often whilst construction is taking place) it is no wonder that the final cost is often different to the estimate.

The other reason for the difference is that the papers/public only remember the first cost mentioned when the design is still a scribble on the back of a fag packet and before any serious design work is done. Somebody mentioned that it is designed to withstand the impact of a cross channel ferry and I'd bet that wasn't part of the design when the first costs were drawn up.

Quantity surveyors & clerks of work are around and do do their job properly, just have a look at the private sector and we are bringing projects in on time and on budget every day of the week.

Wasn't Mike Golding moaning on the other day because he'd run out of handcream? Aah, poor lamb.

BTW, I love the spinnaker tower too.

I heard Ellen on Radio 4 this morning. Her persona was far more balanced during that interview so maybe the problem is with editorial style at the web site.

I'm not trying to put Ellen down - but we do seem to get a rather negative view of the whole experience - yet she obviously enjoys it

I now think this might be a news management problem and not an basic personality flaw in Ellen.

Let's face it, she needs pro's who can present her in a better light because outside of yachting circles many people don't have a good image of her.

That's what gets me, the private sector can, but the public sector cannot. Yet the ones that make the mistake's in the public carry on doing the same time after time, and we pay up.

You've up set the acolytes of St Hardware Store.

Those earlier acrimonious replies from people who have not yet clocked up 200 posts are like water off a duck's back.

I was a big Ellen fan and got up early one Sunday to catch her start on the web. I even posted the first "She's off" message here at Scuttlebutt.

However I have gradually lost faith in the TeamEllen.com enterprise due to the presentation of her endeavous. I hurt with her as she rounded the Horn and then clocked up less daily miles than a Westerly Centaur is capable of. I was genuinely exited when the new breeze filled and she shot off once more but could TeamEllen.com allow any positive vibes for 12 hours?

Like I have said its bad news management.

She was on the news 30 min ago, started of on a positive notes, she's back a day ahead, but then it well she has the doldrums, no wind or bad gusts and back to the negative vibs.
It's as if they must have this will she, whon't she do it, lets get them on the edge of the seat attitude.

You think the distortion of Ellen's round-the-world capers by her media team to wring every last drop of drama from it is bad, wait for the Volvo Ocean Race.

I was reading somewhere that they were in talks with Channel 4's Big Brother crowd for a kind of reality show that had little interest in the sailing but would focus on the tensions of all the crew sharing the same few metres of living space. God that sounds awful.

On the other hand, maybe a great new idea for a round-the-world-race. Start with a fully crewed boat, gradually vote them off until you get down to a singlehanded effort? Not sure how they pick the losers up off the icebergs though!
