Starting from episode 1, is back on Drama channel 128 starting on Saturday.

Shocked to realise it's dated as 1971.

Might help to offset the sailing winter blues a bit.

I once met the star, Peter Gilmore, in the bar at the BBC. He seemed a very nice bloke, but told the 15 year old me, that he didn't really like sailing at all!
One of many disappointments caused by reality!

As I remember, the series started off well with plenty of nautical content and then degenerated into a domestic drama series as it lost sight of what it was originally supposed to be; rather as the Archers has lost touch with farming. However, the opening few minutes with aerial views of a square-rigger under sail and Khachaturian's Spartacus music were very enjoyable.

My memories of this as a 6 year old were of a man getting his fingers pulled through a block and the mate calling out for 'hot turpentine and pitch'. There was some lady of significance in the story who was shocked at this because she wanted the crew to be treated better. I think there was a power struggle going on between the woman (maybe the owner) and the boss on the ship.

Didn't get to see much of it, as out of the country. But a friend (of Wooden Ships brokerage) was hairy enough to get an extra part in it. Looked suitably pyratical :o)

Perhaps she thought he would be expected to drink it :D

No shock to me. I had to play the theme tune in band concerts from my 1972 "debut " and on for years...

Loved the first series as a kid and still love the music.

Can you imagine K's feelings? He writes a beautiful piece of music about two lovers and their build up to a kiss. Seventeen years later the BBC use it as sailing music and that's it: it is forever known as the Onedin Line music! And so it should :). It's possibly the best wave-seeming music ever...

We saw some of it filmed in Gloucester docks. It was pretty cold and I recall one rather beautiful lady wrapped up to her eyeballs in coats standing on the quay. When she was called, she was on the deck with bare shoulders fighting the shivering. They don't all always live luxurious lives.
We chatted extensively to a few of the actors who were really very friendly.

I have fond memories of a short spell as an extra on series 2 or 3 IIRC. I was shinning up the rigging of the Charlotte Rhodes aka Kathleen & May while tied up alongside Bayards Cove in Dartmouth while Onedin & Baines were talking on the poop. It was just one spoken sentence, re-shot at least 12 times and I had to come down and climb again for each take.

FWIW, the whole thing is on Youtube.

Lovely to hear from you again.

Where have you been?

A combination of 2 factors - SWMBO had a couple of blue-light visits to hospital so we deemed it unsafe to be out at sea with a risk of a recurrence. As a result Snow Leopard has been laid up ashore for the last 3 years gathering green slime. About the same time I got fed up of the level of malice in the Lounge so stopped posting.

Don't know how long I'll be around as SL is under offer and her replacement is a dinghy.

Nice to have you back. Your insight, experience and wisdom have been missed. Hope all is well with family matters.
