In a recent thread which featured the dreaded S*****n, there seemed to be a vague Oooo arrr no thanks, at the prospect of having both engines fed from a single fuel tank. So I started to think about the possible objections and can't really come up with anything significant. Taking on a load of contaminated fuel? Don't most of us fill both tanks at each refuelling stop anyway? The dreaded bug? Both tank in same environment and only a few feet away from each other so a fair chance it would develop in both. So what else is there? What does The Team think?

I thought most multi tank installations had balance pipes, so they're linked, dunno maybe I'm wrong.

<font color=blue> Barry, twin tanks are usually linked with a balance pipe but many people opt to switch the link off. I leave mine open but suspect I am in the minority. I top both tanks when refuelling so would be importing any crap to both tanks anyway.

I guess the principle is that if you have two completely separate systems each with unreliability of say 0.05 then the chances of both breaking down are 0.05 x 0.05 = .0025 The flaw is that one of the major risk factors is contaminated fuel so to hit the .0025 you should fill up at different stations.
who's going to do that?

Re: swift halt..

Came to a swift halt when my single petrol tank fed water into my twin mercruisers.Always had previously filled up using jerry cans, made the mistake of topping up from Marina. Why is it always wind over tide when you break down.

Not a justification for the extra cost but it's nice to be able to monitor the fuel consumption of each engine independantly

When cruising I always try to balance the RPM of each engine but only by monitoring the fuel consumption of each did I find that the starboard engine was doing more work, or has a fault, causing it to burn 15% more fuel

Hi

You balance the RPM i see ,maybe the rev counter could be out with the sinc with the otherone ,on mine i have a gague which monitors the output power of each engine ,port /starboard, i balance the power so as the needle is in the middle ,which often means the rev counters are out by up to 500 rpms sometime.

Dave.
