I am definitely considering the GX 2200, ticks a lot of boxes in regards to my limited budget as well

If you already have an AIS receiver or transceiver you could buy the GX2000 and connect an existing AIS and GPS

A Garmin plotter, connected to AIS and a Garmin VHF has the ability to call an AIS target from the plotter, by selecting the target and pressing the "Call on VHF" option, no other system can do this.

My Simrad RS40B and NSS MFDs have this function. I can do this from either the plotter or radar display.
