I think your right. Its the strength of the hull (or lack of) around the pods which can give an issue. If you tear a p bracket out, you have a smallish hole, rip a pod out you have a huge hole!

I wonder what happens if you come down on an ips. Does it just punch up through the hull?
 
I checked her over when dried out next to lifeboat slip at Beaumaris. Looking at damage looks like she went backwards relatively slowly onto rocks at Old Moelfre lifeboat station. Port side rudder took the hit and there was a cushion stuffed in the hole! Rumour has it she had been at anchor off a Lee shore! Surveyors have taken a look and will probably get her patched up to be towed to Port Penryn at Bangor to be craned out. No local hoists big enough. Look out for a slow wide load on the A55 soon!
