One less swan

There's a difference between discarded tackle and the 'one for the pot' mentality that's on the increase. To some it's no different than picking blackberries and an easy target with the lack of police on the river.
On the whole, I've found sports fisherman to be very respectful when it comes to the river but not necessarily the moorings.

The population have been nicking one for the pot be it sheep rustling, geese at Xmas, his lordships deer,pheasants/partridge,salmon/trout,since time immemorial, nothing changes except which section of the community gets to feel the heat.

And some people get all their "facts" and figures from the Daily Mail. Ho hum.
Never read that sh#te in all my life, in fact, I do not read ANY national press as they are all to politically biased and do their darned best to persuade the masses to agree their own greedy political ends. Let's just say I observe and make my own analysis of things around me. I prefer not to be a sheep or a wildebeest led to my death by the herd!!!

I am really with Oldgit on this. There is nothing much new going on, it is just the swans on the river that are the target. It is a shame that this thread has descended into such a rant about "immigrants" and our place in Europe and whilst I generally avoid getting drawn into these things sometimes you have to say your piece.

This country has a history of welcoming displaced people from around the world. My paternal grandfather was Irish and he faced discrimination when he was looking for work after the First World War in which he fought for an Irish regiments. Subsequently we have had the Windrush generation and the Ugandan asians amongst others who were all treated with fear and suspicion in many quarters and now it is the turn of the Eastern Europeans.

As to what my grandfather would have made of it, I rather hope he would think that the free, open, democratic and peaceful Europe was exactly what he was fighting for.

Not just the river; at Midhurst there used to be a very friendly swan on the pond, he was a well loved local character who would walk up and stick his head in my girlfriends' handbag looking for bread etc.

He was killed by an Eastern European, who was very lucky the police got to him before the locals.

I do agree about discarded fishing gear, another crime - I have taken part in rescuing swans with lead and line down their throats and hooks in their feet - on the River Frome at Wareham.

What do they taste like? A bit like goose, but with a game flavour I'd have thought. Now, a good recipe for the poo machine aka canada goose please.

Indeed I remember fathers single handed attempt to rid Trowlock Island of its new inhabitants some 25 years ago ... Sadly they got the better of him despite steeling most their eggs !
