Walking the towpath in the Walton area at the weekend and was sad to see the carcass of a swan on the bank - this is the 3rd such mutilation I've seen in this area since the summer.

I doubt if it was natural causes as it had been gutted of all the 'meat.'

Who or what would do such a thing?

I have come across carcasses at cookham/spade oak/marlow etc whilst walking the dog.also all the fishing signs are in polish to remind people not to take the fish home......we reap what we sow....

The carcass I saw this summer had been badly butchered for its meat (also at Walton, by the anglers pub).
I had a close look and foxes don't use knives.

Yep, sadly, our or some of our peoples from abroad, do catch, kill and eat the Swans :(

Seems its done at their home country, where they come from, so they are quite skilled at it :(

Yes in Kent along the river banks, signs in a Foreign Language, words to the effect - leave the Swans alone, do not catch or kill them :(

But there are reports of Barbie's where fresh caught Swans and Fish are Barbied :(

With Christmas coming, I expect we'll see a run on free swan meat. And I'm sure it's not the sports fisherman that have discarded the half dozen carp heads that have washed up next to my boat this year.

If only they were as keen on moorhens.

Then it was one of our immigrant friends whom must not be criticised for fear of the P.C. Brigade.

not friends by any means and your right one must not say a word against immigrants or try to stick up
for our country, that is if you are English of course or you get arrested and charged for it ! how wrong
is that ?

YUP! You must be particularly careful on here where even the truth cannot be stated. There's some real PC Nazis doing the Big Brother job here. Try quoting crime figures that show how much crime is committed by what percentage of the population and you'll be whisked off the a re-education camp in no time at all.

Welcome to the UK, free health care, take all the housing, don't pay tax, claim what you can if the authorities even know you here, eat all the fish you can catch, don't worry about your litter or the environmental impact, and now eat all the swans you can grab!!! #*ck being part of Europe I want OUR country back!! I'm not interested in a free Market so we can work ourselvs to an early grave so the worlds mega rich live as kings while we fund them! I bet all my grandparents who all fought in both world wars are turning in their graves, how sad.

Interestingly some Europeans fought, (and sometimes died), in both world wars too.

Yes, true, but my point is there needs to be, and should have been, some, or more regulation to the influx of immigration to an already overcrowded country. The problem is nowadays people/politicians only look at 5 year plans, and they're only intrested in thier own greedy arses.

Approx 100,000 swans in UK.
Whooper
Berwick
Mute.
Suspect that far more birds of all kinds are killed by fishermen leaving line and other detritus on the river bank.
Lead weights by some accounts caused up to 50% of swan fatalities in the past.
" Injuries to wildlife caused by fishing tackle are unfortunately very common. Nationally around 3000 swans a year are reported to be affected, along with many more birds and mammals."

There's a difference between discarded tackle and the 'one for the pot' mentality that's on the increase. To some it's no different than picking blackberries and an easy target with the lack of police on the river.
On the whole, I've found sports fisherman to be very respectful when it comes to the river but not necessarily the moorings.

And some people get all their "facts" and figures from the Daily Mail. Ho hum.
