I do all I can to stop my halyards hitting the mast as it annoys me when on board. I have found though that when the wind gets to around 20 knots plus, it is very difficult to stop.
Some of the ropes can't be got away from the mast due to fitting locations, etc.
When it really annoys me I use some decent earplugs.
Another pet hate is having to listen to other peoples idea of music when at anchor in a peaceful area.
