One for the hams - antenna wiring

This is what our setup for a steel boat is. Earth wire from radio to welded stud on cabin sole steel frame below the radio. Also wire to the tuner. For both of those Copper foil is often recommended but we haven't had any problems using wire. Then Copper foil from the tuner to a short wire connected to the aerial with a clamp. As said the ground makes up half the aerial so ground to the hull will be signicantly better than an engine ground.

That is essentially the system I have except rather than a steel hull I have two linked metal grounding plates and for that reason I don't need to bother with capacitors.

And it works very well. There are so many variable in getting a signal between two stations that I am very sceptical of people who say 'I do it this way and get 5x9's from Azerbaijan, so I must be doing it right'.


But. I do it that way and recently got a '20 db over' from Australia, so I must be doing it right. ;)
