Interesting old ship, launched in 1915. She is still in use by the Russian navy today, I read she is near to where the Moskva sank after being hit by Ukraine missiles.

Somehow I do not think they build them like that now, or are they desparately short of ships.

Amusing that Ukraine has apparently designated the wreck of the Moskva an item of Ukrainian underwater heritage. ?

I trust the Ukranians will be sending someone out to fine the Russians for interfering with this protected heritage.

Pioneering Spirit is in and about Lerwick at the moment, delivering the Ninian Northern for recycling.
The scale & ambition of this barge is astounding! I've done the U/W survey of the Ninian Northern jacket a couple of times, so to see it as a small piece of deck furniture puts it into scale for me.

I saw Pioneering Spirit in a Norwegian fjord and it did not seem that big, although I know what a giant it is. Must be a perspective thing, given the scale of the surroundings there.

WOW! I'd have loved to have been at the meeting where that recovery system was 1st discussed! Can you imagine if that had been discussed in a Govt. dept??
If this is something that catches your imagination, the full decommissioning guff is good to read.
Just an observation, but the lower structure isn't present in the photo of Ninian Northern on the barge, so it would still be on the seabed. Also, most of the conductors seem to be removed, though the piles are still in place offshore, but an awful lot of work has already happened to get it laying flat in Lerwick.

They all illustrate the deck space of any multihull - all that is missing is a, or some, masts.
