I've always understood that a Burgee is a triangular flag flown at the masthead which denote where the weather comes from eg Yacht/Sailing club
A Pennant is a triangular flag flown elsewhere in the rigging usually denoting part of a signal
A house flag is a rectangular flag denoting where the wearer comes from eg club or company.

The modern or a not so modern practice of flying a trader flag from the Cross Trees to denote what club the yacht comes from to me is appalling. I cannot understand why people cannot fly a burgee from the masthed if they are going to fly a burgee and if they insist on flying a clubber emblem from the Cross Trees why they do not fly a house flag

I suppose I will be told that I'm old fashioned and should move with the time, am I the only one to think and act this way?

Can I suggest that rather start another debate on this issue, that you obtain and read the RYA's booklet flag etiquette and visual signals.

It's remarkably clear, and does away with a lot of myth and rumour

but onlt between 09:00, and 18:00, as long as the owner is on board and has opened bottle of mountgay, or mulled wine.... in which case a scull and crossbones may be flown from the right hand bit of string on the cross thing..... unless it offends, in which case it should be flown in a locker.

on the other hand... if the owner isn't aboard, and there's only lager, you may still fly the burgee from your antenna.... as long as it's raining and blowing 4-5 offshore.... if you don't feel sick!

A dead horse re-flogged.

Certainly it matters, to those who know. To those without a clue nothing matters.
Ever noticed that the people who claim that manners don’t matter are the rudest oicks in the bar? Same with flags on boats, the ignorant will continue to spout that ignorance is fine,,,,,,,, and you’ll never convince them otherwise.

Ian,

Read what he said, then think about it. Wind up unfortunately
It matters a great deal to some, but if he was serious he would know a great deal more about the subject

I have learnt of the over 40 years' experience to not only take with a very large hand full of salt but to distrust anything that comes out of the for mentioned qganisation
