I am trying to improve on-board internet access in such a way that I finish up with a on-board wireless hotspot.

First of all my set up:

I am using a Patriot 2.4 Ghz 802.11 b/g/n Outdoor AP/CPE which is equivalent to the Bullet, with a standard Ae and PoE, all sourced from the same company. The output of this is fed into a Netgear DG834v3, via a cat 5 patch cable.

The settings used are as follows:

AP: IP Adress 192.168.2.1 DHCP enabled (Default setting) and set up as a Client Bridge

Netgear: IP Address 192.168.0.1 (Default) DHCP disabled

Setting up the access point was very easy using the default IP address, I found my home network, was able to rx internet on my laptop. Next I set up the Netgear, with a hard network connection to my laptop allocating wireless SSID and passphrase and disabled the DHCP. Once I was satisfied the wireless was working I connected a LAN port to the output of the PoE. Using my iPhone I was able to connect to the internet via the new wireless network and the AP. Ditto my laptop. This was further proved by removing power from the PoE at which point internet was lost.

All good so far. I then attempted to log in to the AP setup software using the new IP address as this would be the method of aquiring a new signal once I moved location. Here is where my problems start, I cannot log in with the new IP address either via the wireless network of even if I plug the output from the PoE direct into my laptop. The only way I seem to be able to gain access is to reset the device and start all over again. The same applies to the Netgear setup pages.

Has anyone got an idea what I might be doing wrong? To my mind once I have comms flowing through the system I should be able to access the set up pages of both units using the allocated IP addresses. There appears to be some conflict between the Netgear and the Patriot. I have tried a range of different options.

Has anyone done anything similar? I do have the set-up manual, but it is too big to upload here.

Grateful for any suggestions

Steve

Are you connecting to the netgear directly, but unable to login to the netgear? Sounds suspicious.

I'd enable DHCP on the netgear and disable it on the AP. I suspect the passing the netgear isn't passing the DHCP request to the AP, or if it is the DHCP is being leased to the AP network rather than the netgear subnet. You could possibly add a routing entry to sort it but they are a pain in the rudder!

What do you get when you open a command box and type: ipconfig /all

If the access point and the netgear are meant to be on the same network then your IP addresses are wrong.

192.168.xxx.yyy xxx is the same network yyy is the client on the network in simple terms.

try AP 192.168.0.1 and Netgear 192.168.0.2

Your laptop cannot 'see' the AP because its on a different subnet - 192.168.2.xxx whereas the Netgear is on 192.168.0.yyyy

You need to configure the lan port on the laptop with an address of 192.168.2.2 and plug the AP directly into it to configure it. Once this is done, you can then reconnect to the Netgear. Its the method I use with a Picostation as bridge and the router supplying the onboard network (wired and wireless).

On your main hub, the 1 which connects to the wan has a standard IP address.

On the dhcp setting, leave that on. Ideally add the 2nd items mac address and configure an IP it will always have, just add a number.

The second hub, needs dhcp disabled as otherwise it'll conflict with hub 1.
Provided you've set a static IP for this it means it will always appear in the same place.

Set up your WiFi and also member to alter your default gateway to the point of hub1 otherwise it'll just look internally

I use a wireless MiFi (mobile WiFi) Huawei E5220 purchased from 3 Three.co.uk. Works very well. You can have it on monthly payments or pay as you go. I can have my mobile phone, Laptop and Tablet on wireless internet all at the same time without problems.
