On board walkie/talkie comms PBO article

[ QUOTE ]
Does anyone know if they would be legal to use in Greece? Could be useful on a flotilla holiday.

[/ QUOTE ]I don't know for sure but surely the PMR spec is a pan-EU thing? Mine has an EU symbol on them so they can be sold anywhere in the EU, or is that too logical for Brusselscrats?

Mind you, I always think of imprisoned plane-spotters when I think of Greece. What do you think they'd make of a pair of yachties using walkie-talkies?

Masterspy and Zarin?

Yess I agree. When I couldn't get a headset type I purchased a motorola PWR with vox and I found the delay too long. I also would not buy again but I am looking at another plan for onboard radio comms

Absolute agreement - wouldn't do without shouting at my wife and any other person helping me or listening to every body else do it. Particularly love the ones coming in where you can tell that THIS time there will be no shouting - but it always deteriorates into a bun fight for all

Update after sea trial

Well we tried the sets in anger over the weekend with SWMBO up front looking for a spot in Lymington as we rounded the corner by the ferry berth. Excellent! Whispered discussions clearly heard and I was able to give more detailed 'advice' without any arm waving or heaven forbid shouting.

Yes you do feel a bit self conscious but we found they could be hidden away quite well under a woolly hat..

We later watched a 'normal' couple having a domestic after the 3rd attempt to moor between fore/aft buoys failed. Her final words to him at the wheel were quite clear as she threw the boathook down on the deck, and we were 100yds away! I did think about rowing over with the headsets to demo them but thought that my choice of timing might be poor. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Re: Update after sea trial

Bealieu Marina ... few years back.

A Horizon 26 was with Husband and Wife ... + instructor. Repeated coming alongside inside the outer T berth was made ... by instructor to show how it was done.

Then Instructor stood on pontoon and sent them off with Hubbie at helm.

Hubbie went downriver a way and turned to make approach ... moderate volume of calls to wife to be ready to take lines etc. ... the volume went up as they approached ... he made an absolute cods of it ... Instructor pushed boat and told him to try again. Back downriver ... turned ... by now Hubbie was shouting his orders .. and failed again ...

3 times he tried ... (on last attempt) ... as the boat glided by my boat ... I said to wifey on their boat ... "don't get angry ... take it easy - you'll be alright ... " ... she looked heavenward .. showing how upset she was !!

After 3 attempts .. Instructor told hubbie to give helm to wife ... she went downriver ... turned ... perfect slot in with hardly a murmur ...

Last seen two people walking separately along pontoon ... with instructor shaking his head !!
