On-board multi-zone audio

No 5 can only be achieved (as far as I am aware) with a B&O TV, but there are problems with fitment or small size of TV. With the Sonos system a Playbar could be used but there is no space to mount it.

The B&O IcePower amps are over twice as powerful as the Sonos amps at 2 x 125W. The B&O app is just as good as the Sonos app, I'm told.

I'm starting to wonder whether I should even bother with 5.1 in the saloon. Can't remember the last time I watched a DVD.

there is a new so called "play base" from Sonos,
a very slick looking playbar

but indeed does one need surround sound?
same for me, never watched a DVD onboard, despite our full surround installation.

note;
doubling amp power is only 3db more Sound Pressure level

Just noticed two announcements in the latest *Nov issue) of MBY
One from Fusuon - 8.8" Speakers that glow!! - page 84
and one from JL Audio (M12IB6 - with woofer) - page 86
Might be worth some research.

If you like Sonos but want a 5.1 solution then have a look at Denon Heos this is the 5.1 amp https://www.denon.co.uk/uk/heos/heos-avr and the room players are https://www.denon.co.uk/uk/heos/wirelessspeakers/preamplifiers

As you mention in the original post the Harmon units are not great, they are very slow and we have found they suffer from over heating unless very well ventilated.

The downside to using domestic equipment compared to Fusion is the lack of waterproof control, we just fit relays in the speaker cabling for the external speakers with a simple mute button at the helm.

I install alot of Fusion kit to yachts with JL audio amps and speakers which is a great combination. We use to have lots of clients wanting 5.1 a few years ago but its vary rarely requested now.

We have (at home) sonos that connects w Amazon Alexa. Now we can say hey Alexa play country music in the kitchen. Very cool. We listen to music 10x more.
