whilst waiting during the long day I came accross a set of the codes we use to describe illnesses and injuries. These are the currency of how we receive payment for services. I came accross one for us:

t.142 injury sustained by being crushed by lifeboat after abandoning sinking ship !!!

I cant find any instance of this code ever being used but raised a smile during this difficult day.

reminiscent of the I'm sorry I'll Read That Again radio sketch featuring a Spanish (?) tranlsation course. A load of lingo followed by the translation "My hovercraft is full of eels."

Hope that you got home for some kip.

Are you sure?

The master mariners handbook vol IV rule 97 (iv) z (a) Suggests it is 7 short toots, 1 long blast, a crunch followed by a prolonged scream?

Thanks for the clarification jimi, the one you are referring to is leeward port (day poor visibility) sound signal, mine was of course the starboard, night, whilst towing a submerged dinghy,NUC signal, as per sub-section z(a) para 35.3.

On a heavier note

Dunno whether you get PBO, and if you do whether a copy of the latest CHIRP summary fell out of it, but if you do, and if it did, you'll have noticed that someone claims more injuries to seafarers are caused by practising lifeboat drill than anything else.

Re: On a heavier note

I'd have thought drilling lifeboats is bloody stupid, typical of these thick MN types boring holes in boats to try and let the water out .. see Maste Mariners Handbook Vol IX Ch 23 S14 Appendix C ... needs removing if you ask me!

[/ QUOTE ]Come off it wee man, put the claws away. Suprised "el pratto" and his side kick haven't had another go at you. Still I suppose he is ignoring you /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I always thought it was 7 short, 1 long and dinging your gong for 10 seconds /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I wonder if we all took turns repeating Jimi's posts, sort of along the lines

Jimi said - I'd have thought drilling lifeboats is bloody stupid, typical of these thick MN types boring holes in boats to try and let the water out .. see Maste Mariners Handbook Vol IX Ch 23 S14 Appendix C ... needs removing if you ask me!

if we could all get ignored too.

It has been done...

On the outbreak of war in 1939 the third mate of a British tramp thought he had better check his ship's lifeboats, and found they had been nailed to the chocks. This is absolutely true.

Well known fact

Has been true for decades. Company I worked for had not lost a ship since 1943 but we got loads of injuries in boat drills, and one fatality due to a battery explosion in a lifeboat (whilst the boat was being checked).

Since they it has got much worse, due to two factors:

1. Inspectors now insist on seeing boats lowered to the water

2. The IMO has required lifeboat hooks to be of the "release on load" type - there are many different designs and some of them (see MCA website for M notice) are lethal.

Re: Well known fact

Was a bad accident here a few years back during a lifeboat drill - one of the hooks failed and dropped the boat while being lowered - one was killed and another (think was only one other) injured. Can't remember the details in the report but was some fault in the hook.

Queen Mary ....

Story goes that she used to have her Safety Survey in Soton ..... where she used to dock same side to each time ..... until one time she docked other side to.

Safety Inspection starts .... orders issued to lower away xx number of boats as example etc.

Can't remember all the story - but supposed to be that first boat carried away from the falls and fell into the water.... then second.

No idea whether true or not ..... suspect it to be an old salts tale !!
