Went to buy new olives for two fuel-supply from/to tank diesel pipes today, two chandlers did not have them so, as suggested by one, went to hydraulics supplier in local (Falmouth) industrial estate.

I thought I should have brass or copper olives, to be softer than what appears to be S/S piping and nuts. The supplier said that olives should be HARDER than the piping material, to cut into the pipes.

Bought brass olives, as that was what was on the pipes when I took it apart, and they did not sell copper ones. Was I right?

For fuel connections, copper or brass olives, as used in ordinary plumbing compression fittings are completely satisfactory. The harder type that the supplier is referring to is used on steel pipes for industrial high pressure hydraulics, one make is in fact called Betabite, which describes its action.
