I bought an AH 1000 TP many years ago that I never fitted to my boat .... Snapdragon 23. It sat on the bench until later I bought the SR25. That already had the AH 800 fitted and worked well. The AH 1000 of course is a slightly faster / more powerful version and same dimensions / pin fitting etc.

So I used the 1000 instead. I then acquired a wired remote that allowed me to go forward to mast and still control the boat. Life was BRILL !!

Some of the looks of people as I made way into marina's while standing up by the mast and no one in cockpit were a peach to behold !

The 1000 then after so many years started to act a bit strange .... Raytheon wanted stupid PRE-payment just to look at it ... so I looked around and found a broken 1000 going cheap. Swapped the compass and all was great again. Kept the broken 1000 for spares.

March on another good bunch of years and then the remote started playing up ... so I could not rely on it .... next the 1000 just died ...

So here I was with a dodgy Z076 remote ... a broken spares only AH 1000, a fully working AH 800 and a dead AH 1000.

Pal of mine is a dab hand with electronics - even has a precision Hot Air Soldering setup. He services companys around here with IT and electronic support.

He checked out the remote ... corroded plug. Unit and cable fine.

Dead AH 1000 - found one of the large power transistors blown - so took board from the Spares AH 1000 ... swapped transistor and fully working again.

Checked out the Spares AH 1000 and apart from that transistor and the compass I swapped - its a good spares unit as mechanicals / motor / button boards etc. are all good if needed.

To say I'm a happy chappy is fair comment !!

(I know I can get a later version TP and connect computer etc. - but TBH - I'm happy as is... I do actually have the Autohelm NMEA interface for the AH 1000 - but could never get it to work ....)

The tiller pilots of which you speak are modern stuff.
The REAL " Golden oldies" are the Nautech Autohelms

Yep - the old ones with a dial on top !!

But c'mon - the AH800 and 1000 like I have are vintage jobs today ... even the ST1000 is considered old hat today ... but some still think its worth gold price !!
