I have been given a rather old but hardly used yam 20a (1975 ish)that was supposed to be a non runner, previous owner had tried fiddling with just about everything, timing, mix screws on carb etc and only made things worse (well duh) took me 30 seconds to diagnose fuel pump knackered fixed that now runs great but not as good as i would expect does anybody have a clue where to start looking for a manual so I can put all the things matey buggered back where they should be? preferably downloadable and even better, free!!!!
p.s. Yes I have done the carb, oil, impellor etc

I asked the same question the other day and got this really helpful response from VicS (http://www.ybw.com/forums/showprofi...5&Board=pbo&what=showflat&page=8&fpart=1&vc=1)

"You can access the owners manual to read online from http://www.yamaha-motor.com/outboard/service/servicehome/home.aspx
although the site is really for models sold in the USA. I am unaware of a similar site for the UK!

But first you will need to identify the year. You should be able to do that from http://www.storesonline.com/site/573683/page/599222

If necessary look at what you think might be the manual for yours and you will find an illustration of the plate on the transom bracket that gives model/serial numbers and the year letter."

Unfortunately the owners manuals available on the Yamaha website are only for much more recent models.

For the information required a workshop manual may be necessary. I wondered about a Seloc or Clymer manual but I have not found one going back as far as 1975.

I dont know how good the Yamaha board is at iBoats

With such an old engine there could be many small things that could be causing what you say.
The 20a has points under the flywheel as well to make things even more fun and at 30 years old would be in need of a sort out.
If i was you i would get in touch with a good outboard repair centre that has the old manuals and such and ask for settings or better still give it to them for a tune up
Hope this helps
Joe

I have here a Yamaha service manual 20A(E) /25A(e) part no 656-28197-80
Covers the numbers
model 20A short 06116 and following
long 36401 and following.
It's points ignition.
I don't know the date, but '75 sounds plausible. My outboard was stolen several years ago.
The manual is tri-lingual, with a different ligo in each column so you , may need the whole thing. I could scan the odd page or sell it for a fiver.
It weighs about 450g so about 2 quid to post it in the UK. Or pick it up from Portsmouth. Where are you?
How do we check its the right one?

Hi iw395

My outboard is a 25A from around 1971 ish. I am trying to find the contact breaker setting so if its in your manual that would be a great help. My outboard details are 25A serial 648 L 37831. Its a long shaft so if the manual covers it I would be interested in buying.

Cheers

Paul

I've just come across your post. I don't choose you still have the manual do you? I'm restoring a 1971/2 P-450 which is pretty much the same as the 25A and the manual would be a real help. In only up the road in Arundel. Thanks Marc
