Hello all, it's that time of the year again for servicing etc. My Suzuki DT2.2 outboard engine has been ok but to keep it that way I would like someone to just send me a simple A4 sheet of how to service it, the bits I need and where to get them and where the impeller is and how best to get at it and any tips.
My engine number is 0222 376295 I cannot see a year of manufacture so perhaps the last two numbers as in 95 is its year of make, would that be right?
I don't want a lengthy manual unless that is, someone has one they don't want.
I look forward to you replies.
Cheers, Kevin

My opinion would be you should run it in fresh water to rinse out the salt, drain the fuel from tank and carb. Check the gearbox oil for level and water. I wouldn't touch the impeller unless you have a cooling problem.

It is the owners manual that you need to refer to, not a workshop manual.

Run in fresh water to flush cooling system.

Fog engine to stall

Drain fuel tank, clean fuel filter and drain fuel remaining in carb bowl.

Clean reset or replace spark plug

On pre 1990 models check clean reset or replace points, if not previosly done, then ignore for the next 20yrs

Drain gear box oil. If old oil is " clear and bright" simply refill with fresh ( nb you fill from the bottom ( drain ) plug), fittting new seals on drain and level screws .
If water present or old oil cloudy replace gearcase seals then refill.

Water pump impeller is behind prop. Remove prop and coverplare to access.

Inspect and replace anode if necessary

Apply grease gun to all grease nipples. Grease or oil other external moving parts as appropriate .

Clean and dry outside of engine, Touch up paint where necessary. Store in a warm dry corner of the sitting room.

.

Alternatively ... sling in a cold damp rat infested corner of an outbuilding until a few days before you need it next spring then take to your local outboard mechanic .

I also have a Suzuki 2.2, all I do is r un in fresh water, check to see if water comes out 8f thr telltale, run for a few minutes then turn off fuel and let the engine run until it stops. Clean up exterior and engine, grease/oil clamp screws, grease all nipples, che k g/box oilmand if cloudy change seals and oil. Put in shed until next year. I don't drain the fuel and it always starts 2/3rd pull the following spring. I like mine, MUCH lighter and easier to lug around than a modern 4stroke......

I love my Suzuki DT2.2 and have always flushed in fresh water and let the engine run til it stops with the fuel tap closed. Periodically I might have partially cleaned the carburettor with carb cleaner. This year with the aid of the workshop manual I did a full carb service as it wasn't running perfectly. When I unscrewed the needle valve assemby (item 12 , fig 26 in 4.11 in the manual) there was a nice bit of gum which had collected there, sitting on top of the assembly. Moral of the story is a full carb service has to be done sometime although I have got away with this for probably 8 years. I have done most of the other bits referred to above annually.
The other frustration I had is not being able to get service kits off the internet. I use Outboards Direct in Brighton (very good) but any other recommendations here would be appreciated.

Thanks Monty (enjoyed reading some of your blog too). Tried searching the net for specific part numbers but no joy. However Oakleys/ Outboards Direct are sorting me a throttle stop screw and other bits.

If anyone finds this interesting (and it is interesting when your outboard is not working) searching for the exact part of course requires the correct engine age and model . (See VicS post above) Mine is a DT2.2 not a DT2. I have now managed to find the throttle stop screw online in the uk for my engine not Monty's, but not the float chamber gasket (part no. 13251-98421 ). Going back to the OP, before you start discarding O rings and gaskets as Suzuki suggest in the workshop manual, ensure you can get the replacements as some bits seem impossible to get hold of without dealer help.

There is a dealer locator on the website http://www.suzuki-marine.co.uk/marine/about/contact-us/find-a-dealer/

Thank you one and all, I get your points, not too much to do but glad to know where the impeller is as I had been told by one person that you might need to take the leg off! Is it hard to get the prop off and is the impeller one which is also used in any other engines, just in case I find the 'actual one' difficult to find.
The reason I thought to replace the impeller is because I never have done and I expect the previous owner didn't either as he said he hardly used the engine from one year to the next. This year I only used it once and it didn't take long before the engine got fairly hot.
Cheers, Kevin

Mine is an old DT2 ( points ignition )

When I got mine it was impossible to get the prop off. It should be easy peasy ! After all - why carry a spare shear pin if you can't get the prop off ? It should be a loose sliding fit - held in by the split pin.

Mine was corroded so bad I had to drill a hole in the end of the prop ( on the nose ) and punch it out ! ( be careful if thinking of doing this - prop sahft is a press fit in its bearings ! )

With the prop off the impellor is easy - not even a gasket to get. Also - whipping off the prop makes it easy to run the thing in a bucket of fresh water.

The two bolts behind the prop are for the impellor cover plate ( no gasket ) and there is a small pin through the shaft ( loose ! )

I sourced head gasket, impellor and fuel tap ( genuine Suzuki ) on ebay stores. Power head gasket was available ok as well.
Certainly oversized piston and rings - other main engine parts, might be scarse now.
( Seamark Nunn worth a call - used to be very good for suzuki bits ? )

Worth doing the head as its the only way to properly clean the water jacket - which is a deep and narrow - and quite thin alloy casting which can block and corrode up. I would say do the head gasket every two years - if used exclusively in salt. Try to run it out in fresh as much as possible.

Great little engine.
