Old windlass tripping breaker

Can i add, in general when Ssesjng a fuse size inrush current has to be allowed for, this us ysually much greater than stall current but of a much shorter duration.

RCD's are far more sensitive than the old rewirable fuses, damp from condensation may also cause false trip issue's.

I have a Simpson Lawrence Sprint 3000 windlass which always tripped from time to time and this got worse and worse over time. I had the windlass rebuilt as the insides were pretty worn and manky - but the problem remained.

In the end I found out it was a badly worn bearing inside the electric motor which meant that under load the rotor was blocking.

Got the bearing replaced and it runs really nicely now.

Hi, my replies may be out of sequence due to being vetted as new member.

Wanted to point out what seems a common misunderstanding, when selecting a fuse size, the reason for the fuse is to protect the cable, not what it actually powers. You protect the device at the device.

If you protect with a higher rated fuse than the cable can safely handle, you could rasily have a fire should a short circuit occur in the device.
