Old Threads Being Resurrected

OK.

I resurrected the thread about the removal of sail numbers.

I pointed out that the recommended chemical was not available where I lived and I asked a specific question regarding the suitability of acetone as suggested on the North Sails site.

I was offered four alternative solutions and one admission that a fellow sailor, like me, was also reluctant to use acetone.

Is that sufficiently heinous as to raise grumpy hackles?

I can't do right for doing wrong! I recently posted on a couple of old ones after I was thinking of getting one of those Alphaline batteries. I did wonder about taking the easy option and just starting a new thread but whenever people do that they tend to get chided along the lines of "why don't you just use the search facility? This has been covered loads of times before!" So... I was a good chap and used the search facility, found a few threads from a year or so ago, and thought "Ah, I see they got one - I wonder how they got on?".

There's no pleasing some people!

I like the idea of locking threads when they are 3 months old.

Each case on its merits. Sometimes it's sensible to resurrect an old thread, sometimes not. Hijacking an old thread to ask a new, even if related, question is seldom sensible.

Sometimes a link to an old thread is the way to go but then people add new posts to the old thread resulting in two threads running simultaneously on the same subject. That's even worse.

+1... You often see threads responded to with "try searching for it (implication of idiocy) .. it's been done to death here n times". Start a new thread on the subject and you get told off, raise an old one? get told off.. . can't win :ambivalence:. That said, something that is donkey's years old is probably not worth raising.

Can't be arsed to analyse the stats of every thread before reading or contributing.

A lot of forums (with the same software) put up a warning saying the thread is XX days old.

Maybe my forum settings are different from everyone else's, but right under the title of each thread on my forum page there's a useful note which says "Started by ...." and the start date. It's fairly easy to see which are old ones.

New thread and link to the original would work well.
On the subject of things getting up your nose, my annoyance is people quoting all of someone's post (inc pics) and not editing it down, when they are just responding to one point.

Esp not editing out links to pictures. I sometimes reduce the size of the text if I quote it all, but i guess that annoys people viewing on telephones ... tuf!

They can view on a telephone? Whatever next?? ;)

Perhaps you cant. I though with these fancy j-pod smart phones that practically everybody else has permanently in one hand you could connect to t'internet and use like a microscopic computer.

Many of the old threads are interesting and I would hope contain information valuable to the newbies on here. Not every poster here is as old as Methuselah nor been posting as long either. - Resurrect them as you will - most are more interesting than some of the drivel posted on here these days anyway.
