Old Sail - Clew Torn

Old Valiant 18 foot.
I replaced my old main with another old main sail
but the foot bolt rope would not fit into the boom.

Rigged sail loose footed, went sailing and clew tore out.

Do I have to get repair and smaller bolt rope put in ?
or will a stronger clew suffice?

To save some money you can rebuild the clew with overlapping triangular patches. Instead of the pressed cringle you can use a stainless ring or triangle using three strips of webbing. As for the foot rope, one way of avoiding the hassle of replacement is to convert it to bullet-type nylon sliders.
