No real reason for this post other than if any of you hadn't realised you can pick up old iPhone 3Gs on eBay for about £50 nowadays. Even if you don't bother putting a sim card in it and just use it as a hand held chart plotter with Navionics, it's a bargain. You don't need any reception since the GPS and Navionics works independently from mobile reception.

Probably preaching to the choir for most people here but might be useful for some. ;)

You would have thought so but they're so much easier to use than a chart plotter because they're touch screen so I generally use mine more than the Garmin now. Finding tidal streams and times is also 10 times faster.

Idea might be sound but just looked on eBay and prices for a 3Gs are more like £75 to £100+ by the time the auction ends. Even damaged ones are fetching around £40/£50

Ok my bad... A standard 3G would do the same job mind as they had stand alone GPS too i think. Give it another few of months and they'll come down again no doubt as the new model is released.

Anyway just a thought.

Any old Android smart phone running 2.1 or higher will run Navonics too.

I Was in the a Swinderlly today looking at all the pretty chartplotters about £300 for the cheapest one, I've never owned one having 2 GPS units 1 fixed 1 handheld is it really worth paying £300 for a chartplotter when i can buy a app for my smartphone or tablet and they do basically the same thing?

Ebay in general is not a good place to find a bargain (although it is great for a seller) as everyone and his dog seems to bid up the price, I find a much better place to look for things like iphones etc is Gumtree and Preloved. For small items most sellers will post and have a paypal account so you still have a degree of protection.
