Hi all. I have and old achilles 24 which I recently bought and it came with 5 half full fuel cans. They are unusable as the two stroke oil has seperated. Any ideas wot to do with this old fuel.
There should be an oil/solvents disposal tank at the local tip. I would have thought they were a bit choosy about putting petrol in but the guy at our local tip just said to chuck it in.
Are you sure it's the two stroke oil sitting at the bottom of the tanks, and not - perish the thought - e.g. water ?
I can't understand how a hydrocarbon mixture would separate like that.
If the tanks have ventilated caps, and have been in the open, it's likely that the lighter, more volatile fractions of the petrol have evaporated, which will make the fuel less inclined to start an engine easily.
I agree with the earlier suggestion: if you HAVE to get rid of the old fuel, add it a bit at a time to someone's car tank. Or flog to a back street garage to use instead of expensive proper solvent in his cleaning rig. Oh me, did I really say that ? Fi !
Add some Octane Booster to freshen the fuel up [available from Halfords] and use it, the 2-Stroke Oil will stll be there and fine.
I have just started a pair of Volvo Petrol inboards that havent been run for five years on the fuel that has been in the tank all that time - took some cranking to prime the carbs but ran a bit rough at first, added octane boost and a healthy dose of Redex and they are starting to settle down now.
oooh. Have you changed the oil? Condensation may have introduced water into the oil. I'd do that as a matter of course, particularly before you put them under load.
Nope not yet, will do soon, haven't run them under load yet. will do that next.
The valve train was horribly noisy at first but also added some 'hydraulic tappet cleaning' snake oil also from Halfords and after five minutes at tickover they magically went all quiet [can't be good - they are Volvo's so probably about to blow up if they are as bad as there reputation]
"Boost, Redex and Snake Oil" Sounds like a Witches brew!
If the Volvos survive "Thats Magic" as the short arsed little bugger used to say! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I have never seen 2T oil seperate out of fuel as you describe. I suspect it is water so carefully pour off the fuel (or siphon it off), then mix 50:50 with fresh fuel/oil mix or just add an "octane booster". The problems with "old 2T fuel" are usually down to gummed up carbs/jets rather than the fuel.

I agree. I never worry about the fuel going stale (as so many people seem to maintain) and our 2 strokes run from year to year without any problem. I have one in the garage that I haven't started for several years. It just started on the second pull on the fuel that has been sitting in it all that time!
In the past I have occasionally cleaned the carb out.
Oil does separate but only if conditions are suitable to induce separation.
Second - you are probably looking at Gum - a deposit that drops out of fuel when subject to oxidation / storage over long periods.
So what to do ? Pour of the fuel leaving the gum behind ... that is crud you don't need. It may have been produced by Octane Booster that is used in some gasolines.
Next mix with fresh fuel and use it ... it is harmless and shouldn't hurt your outboard etc. An small outboard really is a basic engine unlike a modern car with Cats etc.
If you don't like that idea ... the lawn-mower is a good substitute !!
Why waste it ... I run my Garden Tractor, Petrol Strimmer, Outboards, etc. on old and new fuel ... whatever is in the can ... they start ... they run ... they work ... no prob.
Oh - by the way .... I do own and operate Petrochemical Labs ... !!
