Have to replace the bulb in my very old but pretty chrome S/side nav light. The bulb has two contacts on the base (pos and neg) unlike the modern single filament bulb which has one and uses the side of the bulb for the other.
Are these kind of bulbs normally available or should I replace the internals? I bought a replacement from a swindellers but found it was the standard auto bulb.
Cheers Peter

Suggest you look at the bulbs a bit more closely

The standard bulb for nav lights is a Bay15d connection and normally 25w

You may get a festoon (double ender) for the coastal short range lights that is 10w but this will not meet the criteria for the larger yacht.

I'm not promising that you'll find it but take a look at http://www.alampco.co.uk/

Remember though that nav light bulbs are often specials with an unconventional filament orientation to preserve the correct arc of visibility and special filament supports so avoid masking the filament.

If you know the make of the light maybe you can find the correct bulb as a spare.

Thanks all, That site looked great but the bayonets all seemed to be staggered wherase mine were equal. Mine was also round rather than tubular. I think it was 10 watts but, of course I've left it on the boat.
Will check again and come back to that site.
many thanks.

yes correct Bay15D is staggered:

If yours are aligned, IIRC this is a BA15D - however, this would be unusual. The staggered BAY15D is the standard Nav light bulb (for the 25w bulbs) I am not so sure about the 10w ones fitted to the small Hella.

Thats a super post!!

Now if only i had a graphic tablet!! I bought one and it simply dident have software could take it back,What luck the advertising screen at the shop said

"you can return goods if not content with them within 10 days"

I wish i had a user friendly graphic tablet!!

As far as wattage is concerned, for your boat (31' I believe), 10w would be the normal size as required by colregs.

The filament of a proper nav light bulb is straight and is aligned along the axis of the bulb whereas a car bulb has its filament across the axis and would therefore prevent correct cut off of the light at 112.5° as required.

Have a look at the selection at ASAP-Supplies.

The have Ba15d size, but marked as SBC and SCC. I think the SBC are the double contact and the SCC single contact. It would be best to phone and confirm which are which.

They come in normal and halogen types.

I've got two Ba15d double contact halogen 12v 10w home here doing nothing. I ordered the wrong type as I wanted the single contact type. Half ASAP price if you want them.
